PICCADILLY POETS
Read-ins
The read-in is open to everyone. Anyone who wishes to take part is welcome. Just turn up, give in your name, and you will be invited to read.
As in previous series, members of the audience who wish to participate will each read one poem by themselves, lasting two minutes or less.
At each Read-in, a panel of judges will select three of these readers from the floor to read again during the second half of the presentation, with the guest poet and the company of actors.
Poets who have acted as judges include Anna Adams, Leo Aylen, Kevin Bailey, James Berry, Sara Boyes, Alan Brownjohn, William Cookson, Martyn Crucefix, Peter Dale, Leah Fritz, Judith Kazantzakis, Pauline Lisowska, Richard McKane, Gerda Mayer, Ann Meek, Patricia Oxley, William Oxley, Mario Petrucci, Chrys Salt, Peter Scupham, Anthony Thwaite, Irving Weinman. and Julie Whitby.
Since there are only three events during the present autumn season, the Read-in competition will continue during the Spring season. On the last Sunday of the Spring Season (date to be announced), all the readers from the floor selected from the floor during the Autumn and Spring seasons will compete. The audience will vote an overall winner. Any judges present will have five votes each.
The winner will be offered a full reading during the 2001 summer series (date to be announced).
In addition, the winning poem (or an extract) will be published in HQ Poetry Magazine , whose editor Kevin Bailey is a member of the judging panel.
As an experiment, the read-ins in the Spring 2000 series were non-competitive. Winners of previous competitive series have been: William Ayot, Ken Barclay, Bridgette Bennet, Moyra Bremner, Graziella Cacace, Angela Darku, Caroline David, Elizabeth Kay, Andre Mangeot, Herbert Woodward Martin, Bob Newman, Mary Parker, Jack Raymond, Vera Rich, Mollie Russell-Smith, David Savory, Hilary Sheers, Vivienne Vermes, Rita Watts and Pam Zinnemann-Hope.
