Nokia has agreed to team up with Intel to develop 802.16e a WiMax protocol capable of providing high speed wireless internet access over long distances. The new protocol will be made suitable for notebooks and mobile phones and a strategy to roll out bases stations will also be developed.
It is being hailed as complimentary to 3G but this much cheaper and arguably better technology could mark the beginning of the end for 3G although those companies that contributed more than £20Bn to acquire the licences may have a different view!
