A town gate, "Finkle Bar" once stood on Finkle street near the Black Lion hotel (just visible in the picture). The gate was demolished in 1773, its position is marked by a plaque. Across the road on the walls of one of the houses is a Pheonix plaque. It is the badge of an insurance company and was there to signify that the house owner could call out the insurance company's fire brigade if needed.
Finkle street leads on to Newbiggin.
Chantry Wynd a small shopping area is located just off Finkle Street near the Market. A good bistro can be found here.
