Not bad at all, although it relies to heavily on things that jump out at you. Therefore I won't be riding again until they make some major changes as it is beginning to bore me.

Alan, I agree 100%. A year or two ago people were really excited about the changes they made - two skeletons now head towards you and the camera has been moved. Some effects are really great, many are a letdown. It is beyond me why they haven't updated it.

Although I see your point, the Haunted House is by far the best haunted house that Britain has to offer. It is too dark inside though, and could do with a story like Phantom Manor, but beggars can't be choosers. I like it.

It made me jump the first time, but it's getting quite passé now in the age of hi-tech machines with a decent story line (i.e., now a bit unoriginal).

Alton's Haunted House preceded the renaissance of "haunted" attractions which swept through UK parks in the mid to late 1990s (just as the X Files made the paranormal chic), and was probably the most impressive ride of its type in the country. Since then, the ride has remained virtually unchanged, and is in need of a revamp. The ride features a mix some impressive moments, such as the surprisingly effective use of the old revolving barrel trick, and downright awful ones (the hologram effects in the queue "pre-show" is particularly out-dated). My biggest criticism is the lack of story, which leaves the ride as a series of fragmented scenes, which is a bit of a wasted opportunity - I suspect that if the ride were built later, Alton would have tried more to create a creepy atmosphere, rather than use rely on individual "in your face" effects. Compared to later rides, it now seems odd that a park which takes such pride in its theming fails to create a story to explain why the house is haunted, or why the riders are there (Drayton Manor's The Haunting for example, casts the rider as a paranormal investigator). As for the ride's oddest feature, it has to be the souvenir photos, which are taken when absolutely nothing of note is happening, making for dismally uninspiring pictures! In the category of British ride-through Ghost Trains, this is the best of an uninspiring bunch, easily eclipsing those at Blackpool or Oakwood. To fans of the genre, I'd definitely recommend you try Blackpool's walk-through Pasaje Del Terror - a far more extreme experience!
