Julian May has written several books based on the theme started in her Saga Of The Exiles. The later books, Intervention and The Galactic Milieu Trilogy go into the background of some of the 'history' (though this is a difficult word to use in this instance) of some of the characters featured in the Saga Of The Exiles. If you havent read these books they come highly recommended by myself.
