Sparhawk has offered freedom to the Troll-Gods trapped in the Blue Rose in exchange for their aid in the fight against Cyrgon, the sinister god of the Cyrgai. So the Trolls devour the steaming flesh of the enemies of the Tamuli - until the Cyrgai generals are inevitably defeated. Then those same enemy troops return to dust - magicked as they were from antiquity.

But hungry Trolls are the least of Sparhawk's problems. Facing defeat, Cyrgon has turned to the unspeakable arts of Zemoch magic. He has brought back into the world the very essence of evil which was cast out at the beginning of time by Azash and the other Elder Gods. Klael! As ancient as the Blue Rose, and as powerful.

Worse, Queen Ehlana has been kidnapped by the Mad Lord Scarpa and the immensely dangerous magician Zalasta. The price for her return is no less than the Blue Rose.

All of Sparhawk's ingenuity and strategis skill are called upon to shape events so that Ehlana is saved and the ultimate battle between Blue Rose and Klael can be fought. But Ehlana is a prisoner in the Hidden City, defended by Klael. The time for strategy, and hope, is past.
