Quarry Brae Primary is part of the Eastbank Learning
Community Pilot. Mr. George Gardner, Depute Director,
is Project Director. There are now six pilots running in Glasgow. Ours started last session. Six
nurseries, six primaries and Eastbank Academy make up our Learning
Community.
James
Dalziel , the Head Teacher of Eastbank Academy is
also the Principal.
The aim is to raise attainment by improving transition at pre5 /
P1early stages and at P7/S1, having a common Development Plan (currently
for Literacy (Writing), Numeracy, Science, ICT, and Modern Languages).
Another aim is to improve administration
with a Bursar, Gerry Duffy, who will also help parents with local access to school services.
An Area Child Support Team which is multidisciplinary provides
wide ranging help for families.
The transition project for the pre5/ Early Stages is Glasgow
Education's
"Gender and Literacy" Policy. Margaret Dobie,
Senior Education Officer, who is responsible for this policy
has presented in-service twice and gave for more
than a year a development
worker to take this forward in the pre 5s and interface with the
Early Stages. This tied in with the work in Writing in the
Community. The writing resources we are using are from Scholastic.
The Word Processor to be used from 3 - 18 is the same
one with different levels to add continuity and
reach targets more quickly as children move at transition points. It
reads writing back and can also be used for modern languages.
Some of the Nursery Heads have produced a video which helps parents
to understand the pre 5 curriculum and the Area Child Support Team
have a Parenting Skills Programme.
We
are involved in the Universities' GOALS
project.
The
Eastbank Learning Community was chosen to start the Glasgow City
Council and Greater Glasgow Health Board Fruit Plus Initiative
which will give every primary and nursery pupil
free fruit three days a week. This will be linked with the
curriculum and the short and long term goals are to improve health.
It was launched at Quarry Brae Primary by Scottish Health Minister Malcolm
Chisholm.
