Many of our pupils have a particular
aptitude for art and design. Over the years boys and girls have won a
number of art competitions, had work in prestigious exhibitions and
appeared on TV. We are especially proud of those who have gained gold ,
silver and bronze medals in the Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries Young
Peoples Art Competitions.
Cllr.
Elaine Smith, who represents our area of Glasgow, and
who opened our
Summer Art Exhibition, with a group of our artists.
Almost sixty children from all stages of the school have produced the art
on show and the opening was attended by their parents as well.
The choir and percussion group provided a lovely musical accompaniment
to the afternoon's events.
We now have an exhibition of our art in the
directorate corridor in the education offices in Nye Bevan House - we were
thrilled to be asked to do this. There is a wall
hanging, large water
colour, a tryptch of Arran, collages and a wide
variety of work by P1 - P7. The convener of the Education Committee,
Cllr.Gray , the Director and staff provided a wonderful visit
and hospitality for its opening. (More in the Photo Gallery)
Along with Sandi Kiehlmann, a designer, some children designed a motif
for our school hall floor depicting the Celtic Tree of Life which
we thought would tie in with the Millennium. It is made of linoleum and
was supported by CITB, Glasgow 1999 and the school. The children, designer
and Head Teacher visited Forbo Nairn at Kirkcaldy to see linoleum being
made and to watch the Aqua Jet cutting process that would prepare their
design.
It has the seven components of a Tree of Life - family love,
fish, bird, flower , insect, serpent and animal. Our two headed serpent
depicting eternal life was shaped by the children into QB for the
school. The Celtic Knot border also signifies everlasting
life.
