This is the embarrassing bit. I've always liked photography. My mother is a semi-professional photographer, and she passed on the basic techniques when I was young. Then I did a photography course at The Drill Hall Arts Centre in WC1, where I learned the basics of black and white photography, development and printing. Soon after I finished the course, I "inherited" a load of darkroom equipment and an old Gnome enlarger from a friend's late husband and started printing shots in my bathroom. Mum found an enlarger in a junk shop for about 30 quid. She bought it (haven't paid her back yet), and I spent a very happy hour or three cleaning it up and making it work. So, now I have a Durst M30 with a 200 watt bulb, plus a load of trays, bits of card for masking, a masking easel and an ancient home-made timer made by a friend's son for a Design Technology project. The setup is very amateur, and my printing technique is not exactly meticulous. I do it more for the theraputic thrill I get from locking myself for hours in a darkened room with a bunch of chemicals and Radio 4. In a fit of total egotism, I created a few notecards using my images. I think they look rather nice, and if you're ever unlucky enough to get a letter from me, you'll see one. |
