North West of Ipswich, Suffolk, and formerly a Royal Air Force base, Wattisham Airfield is home to 3 and 4 Regiments, Army Air Corps . Each Regiment is equipped with Lynx and Gazelle helicopters. Also based at Wattisham are 7 Battalion REME, and a Search and Rescue unit, B Flt 22 Squadron RAF, with Westland Sea Kings. Since mid September 2000, Suffolk Constabulary have leased a hangar,and now operate their Eurocopter EC135 from Wattisham. At weekends and Bank Holidays, there is an active Gliding Club.
Although there will be helicopter activity at any time of the day or night, Air Traffic services are normally only available during weekdays (08.00 hrs to 17.00 hrs local time), and when required by the Army (usually Monday to Thursday, no later than 23.00 hrs local time). The Air Traffic Zone is permanently active.
