Canadine Early - Family Tree

This is a summary of the information we have discovered about the early family history of our Candadine family.

There are two main versions of this quite rare name: Canadine and Cannadine. Although from about 1800 there is not much mixing of the spelling between the different branches we are fairly sure that the Canadines are all one family and are all descendants of Thomas Canadine (c.1600) and Naomi Humperson who lived in Wellington Shropshire

A related name is Kenderdine (an early Canadine spelling was Kenadine). The Kenderdines came from Stafford (about 20 miles from Wellington, Shropshire) and there are many modern descendants. We have not yet found any clear links between the families but there were Kenderdines in Stafford in the 16th Century.

The earliest references to Canadine are: John Kenedine christened on the 15th February 1569 at Stafford; father John Kenedine.[1]  John Kennadine christened on the 17th May 1599 at Saint Botolph Bishopsgate, London; father Thomas Kennadine[2] and William Cannadyne christened on the 20th October 1590 at St Margaret, Westminster; father Thomas Cannadyne.[3] There is a will recorded for a John Cannadine of Little Addington, Northamptonshire dated 1616.[4]

Abraham was buried at Shrewsbury St.Chad's on the 21st March 1746.[32]

Jane Higgins came from Preston on the Weald Moors and her father may have been Richard Higgins born about 1680 who sold some land in Preston in 1733. A Thomas Higgins was the Churchwarden at Preston in 1739 and his initials are inscribed on a doorway when the church was rebuilt 1739-1742.

Abraham was a Charcoal Burner (or Wood Collier) at Chaddesley Corbett which is what probably lies behind a family story that the Canadines came from Cannock Chase and were Charcoal Burners.

At the 1841 census Abraham and his family were living in Belbroughton; he was aged 70 and was described as a Charcoal dealer.

By 1848 in his will Abraham is described as a Yeoman and he left all his tools and implements to his son Thomas. A Julia Canadine aged 15 was living with them in 1841; she is one of their grandchildren, the daughter of Richard and Mary.

Abraham died on 16th March 1856, registered at Bromsgrove. Abraham's will of 1848 made his son Thomas Canadine, son in law James Hayward, and friend Henry Curtler as his executors. Some of his children Thomas, William, Richard, Abraham, and Sarah are mentioned in this will. For some reason he left his son Abraham's portion to Abraham's children rather than Abraham himself.

A memorial at Belbroughton (eroded) gives some information about the family.

Sacred to the memory of

Mary Canadine who died April 31st 1824 aged 73 also of ---8th 1832 aged 72 years.

---daughter of Thomas and ---Canadine ---14th ---10 years. Also Elizabeth wife of ---Canadine ---Canadine who died Oct 7th 1850 aged 39 years.

The second section seems to refer to the family of Abraham and Martha and Ann and James are two of their children - but if so James must be 63 not 53.

Martha Phillips was born in Wellington on the 9th September 1770. She died aged 73 on the 25th February 1844 and is buried in Belbroughton; registered at Bromsgrove. Her father was Richard Phillips (b.1736) and her mother was Martha Ford (b.1739); they married in Shrewsbury in 1760.[60]

James Canadine (1774-1834). The son of Thomas and Elizabeth. He was christened in Meole Brace on the 13th March 1774.[63] [64] He may be the James who died in Belbroughton on the 21st April 1834 and if so he married Harriet.

Notes[65]

Charcoal Burning in the 18th Century

A Charcoal burner distilled wood to produce charcoal as a fuel for the early Iron foundries. It's use began to decline in the 1750's after the development of Coke (1709) and of more sophisticated blast furnaces.
