Rushgrove Herefordshire - Family Tree

This document covers the Rushgroves from Herefordshire one branch of which emigrated to Australia. These are the descendants of Edmund Rushgrove and Susan.

Edmund and Susan c.1835

One of Edmund and Susan's sons was Wallace Knight Rusgrove who had ten hildren; of these the eldest son was Wallace (Jack) who is the ancestor of most of the Rushgroves in Herefordshire and the youngest son was Leonard who emigrated in the 1920's and is the ancestor of the Rushgroves in Australia.

Edmund Rushgrove (1832-1885).  The son of Joseph and Hannah. He was baptised on the 16th October 1832 in Kington and was living at home in 1841. Edmund was still at home at the 1851 census, age 18. He married Susan before 1861 and they had four children and were living in Bedminster, Bristol in the early years of their marriage. Bedminster was a thriving coal mining and engineering district of Bristol in the period 1840-1880 so perhaps Edmund went there for work. They were living in Bristol when the first two children were born but the last, Wallace, was born in Leominster so they must have moved to Herefordshire before 1870.

At the 1881 census, Edmund, age 48,   was living at 27 Cranes Lane, Leominster and is described as a Nail Maker.  Edmund died aged 53 registered at Leominster in the March quarter 1885.

We do not know much about Susan, Edmund's wife. Her maiden name may have been Vear or Knight as both of these names appear as forenames for some of the children. She was born in Bedminster, Bristol in 1829. At the 1901 census, age 72, she was living with the family of her son Wallace at 21 Cranes Lane, Leominster.

He also later appears in Kelly's directory for 1895 and 1900 as a Nail Maker at Cranes Lane.  At the 1901 census, age 37, he was living at 13 Cranes Lane, Leominster and is described as a Nail Maker working on his own account at home.

'Mr Thomas Morris who is Lord of the Manor, Messrs W T Curtler, W K Rushgrove, John Wilson and Richard Smith are the chief landowners.'

Wallace married Florence Prosser in about 1888. This is almost certainly the Florence Susannah Prosser born in Leominster on the 27th April 1870 and christened on the 18th May 1870. Her parents were Walter Prosser and Susannah. Wallace remarried in about 1920.
