Rusgrove Welshpool - Family Tree

This document covers the Rushgroves from the Welshpool area. These are the descendants of George Rushgrove and Eliza; they have many modern descendants in the UK.

George Rushgrove and Eliza c.1815

George Rusgrove (1813-1900). The son of Joseph and Hannah. He was born in Rowley Regis near Smethwick but on the 1881 census he says he was born in Kington. He married Eliza in about 1840 and they had several children. At the 1851 census, age 38, he is described as a Nailer and was living at 76 Lower Coalford, Ludlow. He married Elizabeth Miles in Kington on the 28th March 1853. At the 1881 census, age 67, he was living at 2 Byron Street, Bristol and working as a Horseshoe Nail Maker.

George died on the 8th May 1900 at 28 Mount Street, Welshpool and his occupation is given as a 'retired Nailmaker/Journeyman'. The cause of death was 'Senile Decay' and the informant was his son George who was present at his death. It looks as though George and Eliza moved about quite a bit as the children were born in several different towns.

Eliza was born in Kington in about 1818. She died in Ludlow; registered in the September quarter 1852.

Elizabeth Miles was born in Kington in about 1820. At the 1881 census, age 60, she was living in Bristol, she died shortly afterwards and her death was registered, aged 61, at Barton Regis in the September quarter 1881.

Children of George and Eliza c.1840

George and Eliza had seven children.

John Rusgrove (bd.1840). The son of George and Eliza. He was christened in Kington on the 12th May 1840 but he sadly died as an infant the same year; registered in Presteign, Herefordshire in the September quarter 1840.

Elizabeth Rusgrove (bd.1841). Elizabeth Fanny. The daughter of George and Eliza. She was christened on the 5th September 1841 in Kington. She died only a few months old; registered in the December quarter 1841 in Presteign.

Caroline Rusgrove (b.1844). The daughter of George and Eliza. She was born in the March quarter 1842 in Ludlow. At the 1851 census, age 7, she was living at home in Lower Coalford, Ludlow. She married John Reynolds in Ludlow on the 6th April 1862.

George Rusgrove (1846-1925). The son of George and Eliza. He was baptised in Ludlow on the 11th May 1846. At the 1851 census, age 4, he was living at home in Lower Coalford, Ludlow. He married Ellen (Eleanor) Morris on the 18th February 1867 in Ludlow and they had several children. At the 1881 census, age 34, his occupation is given as a Brickmaker and the family were living at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool. His great grandson George has a photograph of him which shows four generations of Rushgroves. Ellen Morris (1848-1899) was born in Chester. When his daughter Sarah was married in 1888 George was described as a Mason's labourer.

Ellen died, aged 51, on the 25th June 1899. The cause of death was 'Capillary Bronchitis exhaustion'. The informant was George Rushgrove.

At the 1901 census George, age 54, was living at 28 Mount Street, Welshpool also living there were his son John and his wife Margaret and their daughter Dora. George was still working as a Brickmaker. George died on the 29th October 1925 at 28 Mount Street, Welshpool, aged 79. At his death his occupation was given as General labourer and the cause of death was 'Enlarged prostate and cystitis'. His son John was the informant and was also living at the same address. A memorial card reads:-

'In loving memory of George Rushgrove, 28 Mount Street, Welshpool. Who died Oct, 29th 1925, Aged 79 years, and was interred in Christ Churchyard, Oct 31st'

Abraham Rusgrove (d.1852). The son of George and Eliza. His death was registered in Ludlow in the June quarter 1852.

Abraham Rusgrove (d.1860). Possibly the son of George and Elizabeth. His death was registered in Ludlow in the December quarter 1860.

Richard Rusgrove (d.1860). Possibly the son of George and Elizabeth. His death was registered in Ludlow in the December quarter 1860.

Children of George and Eleanor c.1870

George and Eleanor were married in Ludlow but had moved to Welshpool by 1867 when their first daughter was born. They had eleven children.

Sarah Rusgrove (b.1867). Sarah Eliza.The daughter of George and Eleanor. She was born at Upper Plantation, Welshpool on the 16th November 1867. At the 1881 census, age 13, she was living at home at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool. She was married in the September quarter 1888, at Welshpool, to William Holloway.

George Rusgrove (1869-1950). The son of George and Eleanor. He was born at Upper Plantation, Welshpool on the 6th August 1869. At the 1881 census, age 12, he was living at home at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool. He is described as a scholar. He married Fanny Simester (1871-1945) in the September quarter 1894 at Tylerstown, Pontypridd. Fanny was born in Welshpool and her father was William Simester. At the 1881 census Fanny was living at home, age 10, at 17 Stanley Street, Welshpool and is described as a Scholar. At the 1901 census they were living at 22 Stanley Street, Welshpool. Fanny's brother Herbert Simester, age 17, a general labourer, unmarried, was living or staying with them

Fanny's death was registered in the September quarter 1943 at 14 Stanley Street, Welshpool and probate was granted to her husband George and Eleanor Harding her daughter on the 30th October 1943 at Llandudno. Her effects were valued at £450 2s 11d. George was described as a Sanitary authorities foreman.

Thomas Rusgrove (1872-1874). The son of George and Eleanor. He died, age 1 and 3/4 years, on the 28th March 1874 at 22 South Street, Ardwick, Chorlton District, County of Lancaster. The cause of death was Bronchitus and the informant was his father George.

Thomas Rusgrove (1874-1882). Thomas William. The son of George and Eleanor. He was born in Welshpool in October 1874. At the 1881 census he was living at home. He died, age 7, on   the 14th July 1882 at Welshpool. He fell down a Quarry and died two days later. An inquest was held on the 15th July 1882.

John Rusgrove (1877-1958). The son of George and Eleanor. He was born at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool on the 26th June 1877. At the 1881 census he was living at home at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool. He married Margaret Kate Davies (b.1878) in the December quarter 1899 at Welshpool. At the 1901 census they were living with John's father at 28 Mount Street, Welshpool. Also there is Dora their daughter aged 6 months. Margaret died in 1935, age 57, and her death is registered at Forden in the September quarter. John died in the March quarter 1958 at Welshpool.

William Rusgrove (1880-1881). William James. The son of George and Eleanor. He was born in Welshpool in November 1880 and is mentioned on the 1881 census aged 5 months. He died as an infant on the 25th June 1881 at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool. The cause of death was 'Dentition Cerebral Meningitis Exhaustion'.

Thomas Rusgrove (1883-1951). Thomas Edmund. Known as Thomas Edwin. The son of George and Eleanor. He was born on the 3rd Feburary 1853 at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool. At the 1901 census, age 18, single, he was boarding at 1 James Street, Merthyr Tydfil and is described as a Colliery Labourer. Interestingly his language is given as English whereas the rest of the household speak both Welsh and English. The household is David Jenkins, Margaret his wife and their five children.

Thomas was in the Royal Navy for a period before he married and also worked on the Welsh railways. He moved to the North East in about 1911/12. There, at age 34, he married Elizabeth A Beaird (b.1880) at Lanchester R. C. on the 30th December 1916. Elizabeth was a widow and was previously married to William Beaird, a Railway worker, and they had four or five children.  Thomas and William knew each and worked together on the Railways.

Elizabeth died on the 15th September 1920 at Blackhill, Consett, leaving Thomas to look after their children and some of the children from her first marriage. Thomas, 'Grandad Rushgrove', lived with his step granddaughter Norma Curtis for the last few years of his life.

Thomas died on the 24th May 1951 at 69 The Crescent, Bridgehill, Consett, County Durham. At his death he was described as a Building Contractor's labourer. The cause of death was 'Congestive heart failure and Chronic Brohchitis'. His son George was present at the death and registered it. 

William Rusgrove (1885-1887). The son of George and Eleanor. He was born in the September quarter 1885. He died, age 20 months, on the 29th March 1887 at 10 Raven Square, Welshpool. The cause was 'Measels 8 days Croup 2 days'.

Nellie Rusgrove (b.1886). Nellie Jane. The daughter of George and Eleanor. She was born in Welshpool on the 25th August 1886. There is an Ellen Rushgove, age 14, born in Welshpool on the 1901 census. This might be Nellie. She is described as a general servant, single, and is living at 1 Hey Street, East Manchester. The household is Henry Bucham, 55, a provision shopkeeper and his wife Mary A, age 44; also their sons George and Frederick. She married George H Hamer at Welshpool in  the June quarter 1909.

Robert Rusgrove (1889-1890). The son of George and Eleanor. He was born in Welshpool in January 1890 and died, aged 7 months, on the 19th January 1890 at 191 East Road Tylerstown U S D Ystradyfodwy. The cause of death was 'Marasmus 2 months convulsions'.

Albert Rusgrove (1890-1974). The son of George and Eleanor. He was born in Welshpool in the December quarter 1890. At the 1901 census, age 6?, Albert was living with his Uncle and Aunt, John and Jane Griffiths at 139 Harcourt Street, Ardwick, Manchester. His elder brother Thomas (1872-1874) died at Ardwick, Manchester and his sister Nellie was working in Manchester.

Albert married Catherine Gallavin (b.1894) at Crickhowell in the March quarter 1917. By 1918 they were living in Tredegar and later moved to Welshpool. There is a record of an Albert Rushgrove who served with the Monmouth Regiment (Territorial), Collier Burghtown, Monmouthshire.

They had six children. Albert died at Blaenau, Gwent in the September quarter 1974. Catherine died in the March quarter 1983 at Blaenau, Gwent.

Descendants of George and Fanny c.1895

George and Fanny had four children.

George Rushgrove (1895-1960). George William. The son of George and Fanny. His birth was registered at Forden in the September quarter 1895.  At the 1901 census, age 5, he was living at home at 22 Stanley Street, Welshpool. George married Sarah E M Turner at Welshpool in the September quarter 1919 and they had one son. George died in the September quarter 1960.

Their son George D R Rushgrove (known as Ronald) was born in the September quarter 1925 at Welshpool and married Norah L Jones at Welshpool in the March quarter 1951. He was in the Air force. George and Norah's children and descendants are:-

George W (b.1953) who married Jacqueline Bourne (b.1958) in 1982 and they have three children, Nicholas George (b.Mar/1983), Mark William (b.June 1986) and Oliver Thomas (b.Dec 1992) - all born at Stoke on Trent.

David C (b.Mar/1955) who married Alison J Heeley in 1984, at Bath. They have three children, Benjamin David (b.Mar/1988), William Charles (b. Nov 1989), and Emily Maud (b. Aug 1992) - all born at Bath.

Sally born in the March quarter 1958 at Welshpool. (A Sally Rushgrove married Graham R Screen in 1997 at Pontypridd).

Elizabeth Rushgrove (1897-1982). The daughter of George and Fanny. Her birth was registered at Forden in the September quarter 1897. At the 1901 census, age 3, she was living at home at 22 Stanley Street, Welshpool. She married John T Harding at Welshpool in  the December quarter 1920.

Eleanor Rushgrove (1900-1988). The daughter of George and Fanny. Her birth was registered at Forden in the June quarter 1900. At the 1901 census, age 1, she was living at home at 22 Stanley Street, Welshpool. She married William P Harding at Welshpool in the June quarter 1922. John and William Harding are possibly brothers or related in some way.

Herbert Rushgrove (1904-1934). The son of George and Fanny. His birth was registered at Forden in the March quarter 1904. He married Ellen Primrose Davies at Welshpool in the September quarter 1927. Herbert died on 17th February 1934, age 30, at 12 New St, The Maternity Hospital, Belfast. A will was granted to Ellen P Whitall on the 15th April 1948 and his effects were valued at £632-50s. Ellen had remarried in the June quarter 1939 to William Whitall.

Herbet and Ellen had one son George T H (possibly Herbert) born in the March quarter 1931 at Welshpool.

Descendants of John and Margaret c.1900

John and Margaret had eight children.

Dora Rushgrove (1900-1926). Dora Margaret Kate. The daughter of John and Margaret. Her birth was registered at Forden in the December quarter 1900 and she appears with them on the 1901census. She married Lord N Sladdin in the March quarter 1922; Lord is probably a forename not a title. Dora died in 1926. There is a memorial card:

'In loving memory of Dora, the beloved wife of Nelson Sladdin, 104 Curzon Road, Ashton-under-lyne who died August 6th 1926, aged 25 years. Interred in Christ Churchyard Welshpool'.

John Rushgrove (1902-1903). John Albert. The son of John and Margaret. His birth was registered at Forden in the September quarter 1902. He died as an infant and his death is registered at Forden in the June quarter 1903.

Edwin Rushgrove (1904-1966). Edwin John. The son of John and Margaret. His birth was registered at Forden in the September quarter 1904. He married Doris Evans in the September quarter 1930. He died in the September quarter 1966, age 62, at Shrewsbury.

Nellie Rushgrove (b.1906). Nellie Mary. The daughter of John and Margaret. Her birth was registered at Forden in the June quarter 1906. She married Nelson Sladdin her late sisters husband in the September quarter 1929 at Welshpool.

George Rusgrove (1909-1915). George Albert. The son of John and Margaret. His birth was registered at Forden in the June quarter 1909. He died on the 2nd Novemer 1915, age 6, at Mount Street, Welshpool. He died in a road accident 'killed by wheel or motor Dray passing over his head'. An inquest was held on the 3rd November 1915.

May Rusgrove (b.1913). The daughter of John and Margaret. She was born in the June quarter 1913, registered at Forden,  She married G D Lloyd in the Septmber quarter 1939.

Jack Rusgrove (1914-1966). The son of John and Margaret  He was born on the 21st May 1914 and married Alice Jackson in the September quarter 1937, at Ashton-under-Lyne. He had some links with Albert (b.1918) and Mary his cousins who are the children of Jack's uncle Albert. Jack died, age 82, in June 1966.

Joan Rusgrove (b.1920). Joan K. The daughter of John and Margaret. She was born in the June quarter 1920 and married Arthur Thorp in the June quarter 1940, at Ashton-under-Lyne.

Descendants of Thomas and Elizabeth c.1915

Thomas and Elizabeth had four children.

Thomas Rushgrove (1912-1982). The son of Thomas and Elizabeth. He was born at Benfieldside, Blackhill, Consett on the 18th October 1912. He married Mary Elizabeth Clark in the March quarter 1936. They had three children. Thomas was the landlord of the Rose and Crown pub in Blackhill. Thomas died on the 15th January 1982, age 69. Mary was born on the 4th October 1915 and died on the 19th May 1977, age 67.

Their children were Adrienne (b.1937), Alan (b.1940) and Marilyn (b.1944).

Dora Rushgrove (b.1915). The daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. She was born on the 29th July 1915 at Witton Gilbert.

George Rushgrove (1917-1978). The son of Thomas and Elizabeth. He was born on the 3rd May 1917 at Consett. He married Annie Ellen Bell in the December quarter 1934. They had two children; George (b.30/1/1955) and Anne Marie (b.1957). George died in October 1978 at Consett. He was living with his step daughter Norma Curtis (the granddaughter of Elizabeth Beaird) for the last few years of his life.

Eleanor Rushgrove (1919-1993). Known as Ellen. She was born at Blackhill, Consett on the 18th October 1919. She married J Harvey Coles in the December quarter 1945, Exmoor District. She died in the March quarter 1993.

Descendants of Albert and Catherine c.1920

Albert and Catherine had six children.

Albert Rusgrove (1918-1973). Albert George, known as Jim. The son of Albert and Catherine. He was born on the 25th March 1918 in Tredegar. He married Mary Ryan in the March quarter 1946, at Bradford, Yorkshire. They were in touch with Jack (b.1914) who was Albert's cousin. Albert and Mary had three children. Albert died on the 28th August 1973 at Fagley, Bradford, Yorkshire, aged 55.

Mary's parents were Mary Ryan (b.1897) and Timothy Ryan (b.1895), not related, who were married in about 1923 in Bradford, Yorkshire. The Ryan family on Mary's mother's side came from Ireland originally.

Albert and Mary's children are: Brian Anthony Rusgrove (b. 1/8/1947), Patrick  J Rusgrove (b. 7/Oct/1948) and Theresa M Rusgrove (b. 7/Feb/1957).  

Eileen Rushgrove (b.1920). Eileen Margaret. The daughter of Albert and Catherine. She was born in the June quarter 1920.

Winifred Rushgrove (b.1922). Known as Winnie. The daughter of Albert and Catherine. She was born in the December quarter 1922.

Margaret Rushgrove (bd.1925). The daughter of Albert and Catherine. She was born in the December quarter 1925 at Bedwelty and died as an infant in the December quarter 1925.

Elizabeth Rushgrove (b.1930). Elizabeth May. The daughter of Albert and Catherine. She was born in the September quarter 1930.

Mary Rushgrove (b.1936). The daughter of Albert and Catherine. She was born in the December quarter 1936.
