The "Empty Hand Way" is an ancient eastern art. At Eurokwai we amalgamate numerous styles to create the unique system we teach at our adult Karate classes in Virginia Water . One element is Shotokan which was created in Okinawa by Master Gichin Funakoshi in 1915 (pictured below left), who developed his system from various fighting arts whose history are shrouded in mystery as far back as 1368. Although universally accepted as a 'Japanese' martial art it should be appreciated that Karate is a Japanese interpretation of much older systems developed in China, India and Okinawa. There are many styles created by various Master.
Practitioners of any Karate style should not be concerned with sporting tournaments. The true aims of the art are very spiritual and concern primarily character and health development, the result being one can continue practising, and improving, into old age. It is said Karate is a moving Zen meditation during which practitioners release the frustration and stress of everyday life, resulting in healthier minds, body and spirit, plus of course the ability to defend one's self.
Anyone attending Eurokwai will benefit from 'safe' exercises and will not be expected to engage in any form of unreasonable or potentially dangerous activity.
Karate is not merely a sporting or physical activity. It is a system of character development and life training. To this end it requires first and foremost respect for others, also commitment and dedication. Athletic prowess and ability to perform the various techniques are of secondary importance.
To ensure our students have a wide knowledge of the many ancient self-defence systems, we incorporate into our classes elements of Tai Chi, Kempo and Ju Jutsu. These particular arts have a very ‘soft’ side within their techniques which enables practitioners to relax, thus allowing participation into senior years - indeed it is not uncommon for those who fully understand the soft side of martial arts to be both healthy and practising even after 70 years of age.
