fuda Points Values for Cards

Japanese Version

In the Japanese points version, the five bright score twenty points each:

"Five Bright"

The other cards with scenes ten points, the tanzaku five points and all other cards one point.

Hawaiian Version

The Hawaiian points system is different from the Japanese and Korean schemes (of course).

The most commonly quoted system is as follows. Tanzaku are worth ten points, Crane (Pine), Curtain (Cherry), Moon (Pampas) and Phoenix (Paulowia) are worth twenty. Other illustrated cards are worth five points each and the remaining plain cards - two in each suit other than Rain (which has one) and Paulowia (which has three) are known as "Kasu" or "trash" and worth zero.

As an alternative, to even the suits up, score the bird from the rain suit as five and the yellow paulowia as ten, but I prefer the common system.

Korean Version

The Korean points system is slightly different from both the Japanese and the Hawaiian versions. All five "bright" cards count twenty points: on Korean cards they are marked with a symbol. All other illustration cards count ten points, and the tanzaku (hanging scrolls) count five points each. The remainder score zero.

For the gambling game "Hwa-t'u" or "Godori", the scoring is adjusted to compensate for the other rules (explained in the write-up of the game) as follows:

Gwangs (brights): (these combinations are the most variable in scoring - what follows is about the most common and appears to balance the game fairly well) All five gwangs are worth ten points. Four gwangs (the four not including rain) are worth six points, whilst four including rain are worth four points. Any three are worth three points, whilst two gwangs including rain are worth two points (two gwang combinations without rain do not score).

Ribbons (tanzaku): any five ribbons are worth one point. Each additional ribbon is worth one point. A matched set of "chong-dan", "cho-dan", or "hong-dan" (red, red-lettered or blue tanzaku) is worth three points.

Animals: Any five animal cards are worth one point. Each additional animal is worth one point. A player capturing all eight animals receives double stakes. (Some local rules allow the use of the rain-card bird as an animal card as well). Three birds are "godori" and worth five points.

Pee: ten pee-cards are worth one point. Each additional pee-card is worth one point. Three pees cards are counted as two cards each and are known as sang-pee. If the winner has at least ten pee-cards, any player not having at least six pee-cards must pay double stakes.
