The Lady Chapel in Winchester Cathedral features some wonderful wall paintings. These are the paintings from the bottom row of the south wall, on the right side of altar, with some links to more detail of the stories from the Cantigas de Santa Maria.
8. The Virgin Mary protects and rewards an ignorant priest who could sing only one Mass but which was in honour of Her. This is Cantiga XXXII of the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alphonso the Wise.
9. St Gregory carries the portrait by St Luke of the Virgin Mary in procession during a plague and sees St Michael on top of Hadrian's Mausoleum, sheathing his sword. The Mausoleum was known ever after as Monte St Angelo.
10. The Virgin Mary helps a woman who was taken ill on a pilgrimage to Mont St Michel.
11. The Virgin Mary brings to life a woman who died before making her confession.
12. Two men are seized by Devils and killed for throwing stones at a statue of the Virgin Mary.
13. Christ himself, attended by Saints and Angels, celebrates Mass for a devout lady on an occasion when a priest was unable to do so. |
