When it gets dark, the place looks completely different. If it's foggy as well (this is England, after all) there's an eerie glow of the lights of Winchester.
If it's dark, don't blunder around on the slopes. Walk back down the steps between the trees (careful now, they're slippery when wet) and along the road back into town. Between the trees and the wicket-gate, the open ground you cross is where the old road used to be. Nice not to have to take your life in your hands getting back nowadays. If you head back towards Winchester and turn right at the T-junction, onto Kingsgate Road, you'll find an excellent food pub on the left called the Queen, which I've written up here. It's well worth dropping in for a pint, if you've walked all that way. Who knows, I might be there myself. |
