The Lady Chapel in Winchester Cathedral has some wonderful wall paintings, which represent miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary. I believe that most of them are drawn from the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso the Wise. Cantiga 32 is illustrated by the leftmost panel of the lower row on the south wall, to the right of the altar. Cantiga 15 Esta é como Santa Maria amaçou o bispo que descomungou o crerigo que non sabia dizer outra missa senon a sua.
Previously in Cantiga 32: There was a priest who did not know how to say any mass other than that of the Virgin Mary. He was denounced to the bishop, who called the priest before him and asked if what he had been told was true. The priest admitted that this was so. The bishop then showed no mercy and commanded him to leave the vicinity at once.
In a future episode: The bishop gets up early and gives the priest extra rations of food, telling him "Continue to sing the mass of Her who is our guide, as you have done before, for it is right and fitting." |
