THE CAMBRIDGE DIET

The Cambridge Diet Plan is one of the most recent versions of a liquid protein diet. It comprises sachets of powdered formula, and was originally used to induce weight loss in dangerously obese people in hospital. The recommended intake of three sachets daily provides just 330 Calories - approximately one sixth of the average recommended daily intake for a woman - plus vitamins and minerals.
Suppressing your appetite by the liquid protein diet approach has been condemned as "the ultimate in dieting foolishness." According to statistics from the office of the Food & Drugs Administration in America, liquid protein diets have been the direct cause of the deaths of more than sixty people from irreversible heart arrhythmias. Promoters of the Cambridge Diet proclaim the safety of their liquid protein mixture, indicating that they have eliminated the dangers that caused the deaths with previous liquid diets; this is a puzzlement, since the factors that caused those deaths have never been identified!
The diet should not be taken as the sole source of nutrition for more than a few days. This is because severely restricting calories may mean that despite the protein supplied by the formula the body may break down body muscle, in preference to fat, to utilise protein as an energy source. The American Medical Association has stated that such formulae pose a significant health hazard to those who are not under continuous medical supervision; and it is likely that the British authorities will follow suit.

Why The Cambridge Diet doesn't work for you
Following such a regime would almost certainly result in weight loss in the short term, but it would not help to alter long-term eating habits. As soon as you return to eating 'normally', the weight goes straight back on.
