DiscriminationDAN is a civil rights organisation of disabled people and their supporters committed to direct action to achieve our goals. DAN is fighting for full anti discrimination legislation and equal rights for disabled people. We have developed this charter to reflect the broad range of demands being raised throughout the disability movement. We will campaign around all these demands until they are won.
An end to discrimination in the workplace.
Positive action to redress discrimination.
Equal pay and conditions.
A commission to police anti-discrimination legislation, guaranteeing equality in the jobs market.
Prosecution of employers who discriminate.
An end to "incapacity benefit" and the "all works test".
Payment, equipment and resources to cover additional costs incurred through disability.
An end to harassment, intimidation and victimisation.
The right to live where we want.
The right to form the relationships we want.
Close all longstay institutions/hospitals.
A massive programme of house building, accessible to all.
Full inclusion of disabled people and the wider community in all planning and building.
A rolling programme of renovation of existing properties.
Control over all renovations and equipment services in our homes.
Paid personal assistance in our own homes, under our control.
Government funding of paid personal assistants.
Trade union rights and conditions for paid personal assistants.
An end to private care agencies, redeployment and retraining of all staff.
Reverse all cuts, full funding of local services.
Close segregated educational facilities.
An end to statementing.
Full and equal access to all educational institutions.
The right to attend our local school, playscheme, nursery and all leisurefacilities.
The right to attend the college/university we choose.
Control over the equipment and resources necessary to ensure equal
access to education.
Equal access to the full curriculum.
An end to harassment, intimidation and victimisation.
Employment of disabled staff throughout the education system.
Positive images to redress negative stereotypes.
Sex education available to all children, including information on
contraception and discussion on all aspects of sexuality.
BSL to be accepted as the first language of deaf people.
Reverse all cuts, full funding of education.
All transport systems to be fully accessible.
Training of all transport staff in providing assistance.
A commission to police anti-discrimination legislation on the transport networks.
All passenger information to be available in accessible formats.
Health
Choice and control over any treatment we receive.
Democratic control by the community over the pharmaceutical industry.
Public funding and control over research.
All research findings to be made public.
An end to forced treatment in the psychiatric system.
No compulsory sterilisation.
The right to parenthood.
Reverse the cuts, full funding of the NHS.
Charity and patronage
The right to represent ourselves.
Control of resources currently held by disability charities.
A ban on the public humiliation of disabled people by so called "miracle"workers.
An end to discriminatory images in advertising and the media.
Employment of disabled people throughout the system.
The right to participate in juries, sit as magistrates and other lay officials.
An end to discrimination in the prison system.
An end to harassment, intimidation and victimisation.
An end to the combined discrimination faced by disabled people who are women, black people, lesbians or gay men.
