Robert Ball (British 1918-date)

Born in Birmingham, he won numerous scholarships and prizes at art schools in Birmingham and London. Held a series of teaching posts ending in Gloucestershire College of Art from 1954-1981. He etched throughout his life, printing further editions from his original plates in his retirement after his eyesight became too poor for him to etch. He was frail but mentally bright as a button when I met him at an exhibition that included his work a year or so ago. One of the few survivors of the great period of British etching of whom Edgar Holloway is to my knowledge the only other remaining active practitioner.

Self Portrait - squared up original sketch for the illustrated etching below.

Self Portrait. Etching 1937. Edition of 50.
