WE’RE BACK – AND THIS TIME IT’S PERSONAL -  Well, it’s personal as far as Phil is concerned in “CAUGHT ON THE HOP”, a COMEDY written by the late Derek Benfield, which is being performed by Parbold’s very own DOUGLAS DRAMA GROUP on Wednesday 25, Friday 27 & Saturday 28 November at the WI Hall – Doors open 7.00pm, curtain up 7.30 pm.

It’s Phil’s personal life that’s the problem. You see, the thing is, he is an incurable romantic, who just can’t help chatting up the opposite sex. He’s had more birds on his arm (yes I know that’s not very PC) than St Francis of Assisi. Problem No.1 – Phil’s latest squeeze is looking for more than small talk and wants to set up home. Problem No.2 – Phil’s already MARRIED to long-suffering, but very much in control, Maggie. Step forward George, Phil’s best mate, whose always getting him out of trouble. Can he do it this time ? Come along, banish those winter blues, engage those chuckle muscles and watch the plot unfold. Tickets are only £5 each and are available NOW, just ring Sandra on 462430 or Alan on 464426, or ask any member of the group or call in at Parbold Fruit and Veg, 16 Lathom Avenue.

In this time of recession it’s refreshing to see our local Pubs doing so well. However the issue of noise late at night when folk are leaving the pubs has been brought to the attention of the PACT Panel. We realise sometimes these problems are not caused by local residents, but appeal to all locals to set a precedent by keeping the noise to a minimum when leaving the premises. Many thanks, PACT Panel.

Wool Cargo returns to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal - 46 years ago the big freeze of the winter of 1963-64 finished off general cargo carrying on the Leeds and Liverpool canal as the ice was that thick, which prevented the boats moving the cargos which were lost to lorries never to return, until now. Following discussions with fellow boaters about the demise of knitting wool shops close to the canal Carole investigated providing a service of selling a range of knitting wool from the narrowboat “Patty Ann”.  This summer Carole and Colin Wareing of Colin and Carole’s Creations navigated “Patty Ann” over to Yorkshire. There they loaded a cargo of wool from James C Brett wool wholesalers. Brett’s are located a stone’s throw from the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Bingley. This and further loads they have been retailing to fellow boaters and bank side knitters alongside the canal. Now they are on their return journey to their West Lancashire base in Burscough and will be mooring in towns and villages of Lancashire to provide an opportunity for local knitters to purchase supplies of wool and yarns. Over the coming winter they are going to be moored near the canal bridge in Parbold on a monthly basis with the first visit being over the weekend of 30th October to 1st November. Carole a hand knitter herself creates a varied range of garments, hats, fingerless gloves and jumpers, based on the traditional “Gansey” as worn by the working Leeds and Liverpool boatmen before the big freeze and can also design and produce an exclusive garment to your ideas, colours and requirements. Colin and Carole can be contacted on 07931 356204 to find out where they are at present.
