PCA CHAIRMAN’S REPORT:
by Roger Perry The main hall of Parbold
Village Hall has undergone a ‘green’ make-over with the installation of
a new insulated ceiling and a new lighting grid to make the space more
adaptable and serve both sports and other community activities. The hall
meets the standard for international badminton with a height of over 6
metres but this provided the wrong lighting for other activities. The
solution that has been installed is a new grid to provide lighting for
audiences and meetings as well as sports. The project is putting in
place the necessary infrastructure to enable the hall to benefit the
whole community, as identified in the Parish Council’s Survey. The
driving force behind these improvements has been Ourselves [the PCA] who
operate the hall and Douglas Music. The PCA has raised almost £6,500.00
by its own efforts. This includes a match-funding donation of £1,000.00
by the Royal Bank of Scotland Community Cashback scheme as an outcome of
the staff at the RBS Parbold branch helping out at a Village
flea-market. Parbold Parish Council, the owner of the hall, has awarded
a grant of £2,000.00 and made the project a loan of a further £6,000.00.
The PCA would like to thank all the funding bodies for their support and
contributions, without which this project would not have been possible.
The project has benefited from advice from North West Renewables,
Lancashire’s Community Futures and Philip Edwards, Venue Manager at the
Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. The project has used North
West contractors, principally A2B Partitioning Ltd., of
Newton-Le-Willows, Northern Stage of Oldham and Harrison Cabinet Makers
of Bretherton.
A team of PCA volunteers has taken on the project tasks and would like
to give a special THANK YOU to Chris Lawn, a member of Douglas Music and
retired project management consultant who has coordinated the
improvement works, and thanks to the Working Committee of the PCA for
making this dream a reality .

The Fair Rides will be on the car park at the Back of “The Railway” – many thanks to Anne Brew for supporting the Festival in this way. Lots of fun going on for all the family with Punch & Judy shows and a strolling jazz band. Remember the theme – “Animal Carnival”. The local schools will be competing with collages on the theme. Nominations for the Joan Draper Cup should be sent to the Festival Chairman, Anne Pryer, 45, Brandreth Drive, Parbold WN8 7HF by 30th June 2008. This cup is meant for a special someone who does voluntary work in the village to improve the lives and environment of local people. Last year’s very popular winner was Jean Hardon.
Entry Forms for all show exhibits must be handed in at the DIY Centre by 5.30pm on Tuesday, 8th July. Exhibits must be delivered on the day between 8am – 9.45am. The Show gets busier every year so it is advisable to be early with your exhibits. In particular Art and Photography Exhibitors should note that their Exhibits must be handed over to the Stewards who will arrange their display. Sue Halton is collecting Tombola Prizes, please contact her on 01257 463703 if you can donate something – the Tombola is very important for the Festival – it raises money for next year’s event.
