PCA Chairperson’s report from Roger Perry

Happy New Year Everyone, I hope you all had a good Christmas break as well. This is going to be a Great Year for Parbold and the Village Hall because we have now secured the greater part of the required funding for our proposed improvements to the Hall, which we hope will start March/April time. We hope these improvements will expand the variety of events that we can host for the Village. Watch out for news of the re-opening celebration.

And now SHOW TIME: This month we have 2 events, firstly on the 2nd February, Eleanor Fagg on Violin and Alasdair Beatson on Piano, and on the 23rd February, 'The Hot Jazz Ensemble. Details of both events appear over the page.

Meanwhile, I'm signing up to learn french, as when I go to France, my Sat Nav gives me directions in french.  See you next month.

Text Box: Please send information for March issue by Feb 16th, to Chris Abel, Editor, 13 Greenfield Ave, Parbold .WN8 7DH

Please note that we cannot guarantee to insert items that are sent after the 16th of the month

MESSAGE FROM PC STEVE HACKNEY REGARDING DISTRACTION BURGLARY        Recently there have been occasions of bogus callers who have targeted elderly residents within the rural parishes. Callers may pretend to be officials from an organisation such as the council or your utility company when in fact they want to trick, steal or overcharge you for work they may carry out.
Don't be frightened - most visitors are genuine, but it makes sense to be aware.
How can I protect myself?

·                       STOP - Before you answer the door, stop and think if you are expecting anyone. Make sure your rear door and any other doors leading outside are locked before you approach the front door.

·                       CHAIN - Open the door with the chain or door bar in place. A door bar or chain acts as a useful barrier when talking to unexpected callers. Talk through a window if you can.

·                       CHECK  - Always ask for ID. Genuine callers will always have identification. If you are still uncertain, phone the organisation and confirm the person's identity. Genuine callers will be happy to wait.

Some companies have password protection schemes where they will supply you with a password that only you and the caller will know.

Neighbourhood Watch Schemes are proven to reduce burglary and deter bogus callers.
Reporting bogus callers - If you think you have been a  victim,  report it to the police straight away.  Please contact myself on 01257-462239 or The Lancashire Police Control Room on 0845 1 25 35 45

Text Box: PARISH COUNCIL NOTES :  Clerk:  Mrs Elizabeth-Anne Broad, 1 Pinewood, Skelmersdale, Lancashire, WN8 6UZ.
Tel:  01695 557678   Mob:  07973 340254  e-mail:  liz@ighbee.plus.com   The Parish Council meet on the first Friday of each month at 7.30 pm.  The agenda for the meeting will be posted on the Parish Council Notice Board at the end of The Common shops three days before each meeting.

Please avoid dumping waste in the water courses through the village.  There are concerns that the flooding risk is heightened by garden waste and other materials blocking the culverts, particular at Dock Brook.  Many parts of Parbold are built on the River Douglas flood plains and if you know that your property is at risk please consult the Environment Agency who are currently advertising:  We can't always stop rivers from flooding, but we can tell you when it's going to happen. Only 30 per cent of homes that can sign up to our Floodline Warnings Direct service have signed up. If you're not one of them, call us now on 0845 988 1188
CONTACT DETAILS FOR COUNCILLORS CAN BE FOUND ON THE PARISH COUNCIL NOTICE BOARD ON THE COMMON.

Text Box: DO YOU DRIVE A CAR?  CAN YOU HELP?      Í   I am a driver with the Parbold Community Car Scheme – we really need more local drivers to help with the scheme.  You just give as much time as you can.  The journeys are often very short – ferrying someone to the lunch club or to the Doctor’s surgery, but without a driver that person would have great difficulty getting there.  The Car Scheme is a lifeline for many.
If you would like to know more about it – ring Sandy Smith on 01257 463407

Text Box: RAIL TRAVEL UPDATE FEB 2008 - prepared 10th Jan.  The direct London line South of Stafford remains closed on Saturday and Sunday through to mid-May adding nearly an hour compared with weekday journey times from Wigan. On Saturdays the London trains call at Birmingham, making it the only day when there are good connections to and from the SW. Trains for Manchester on Sundays from 9th February to 16th March will use Victoria rather than Piccadilly, and will not call at Bolton on the 10th February.  Some walkers use the train to Appley Bridge or Gathurst for a brisk walk back along the canal or a circuit home up on the South side of the valley - but remember too that on Mon-Sat using the Chorley bus at 10.23, 12.23 or 14.23 to Anderton's Mill gets you to the far side of Harrock Hill very easily. After a gentle uphill slope it is downhill all the way home with a variety of attractive routes - which can include the Dicconson Arms, the Rigbye Arms, the Farmers Arms or the Eagle and Child if refeshment is required. Allow 2 hours for the walk
More information  available for Web users in the rail travel section in 'odds and ends' in www.parbold.org . Any suggestions for additional material to David Gelder, Tel. 01257 462716
