Parbold Library Is Coming Of Age!

On 21st June 1989 Parbold library was officially opened.

In 2010 we will be 21 years old.

To celebrate we would like to collect any photographs you may have of the site before the library was built, the mobile library that served the area or old pictures of the library itself.

We would also like any reminiscences you may have of using Parbold library or the mobile library in the past.

Please write down your reminiscences and hand them in, send them in an email to parbold.library@lcl.lancscc.gov.uk or tell them to the staff.  Photographs can be scanned in the library by staff members then returned immediately.   Maggie, Marjorie & Linda

Parbold Community Association, in conjunction with the Rural Touring Network, will present an evening of entertainment on Saturday 23rd May from Cumbrian Ceilidh Band ‘ Striding Edge’.  The first half will be a concert of folk songs and the second will be a ceilidh or barn dance, with a caller to guide you through the dances.  An evening of fun for all the family.  Bring your own drink. Despite the fact that 23 years have passed since the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power station, the effects are still felt today and sadly will continue to be felt for centuries to come.  The Parbold and District Group of M&C (UK) brings groups of children to Britain for recuperative visits because it is proven that children who spend a month away from their contaminated homeland are able to strengthen their immune systems. We are holding an OPEN DAY at the Parbold W.I. Saturday 25th April, 9a.m. until 12 noon. Please come and find out more about our organisation, the host of activities we run in order to raise the much needed funds and how we plan the visits.  There are so many different ways in which you can help!!  Please contact Simon/Nicky on 464915, Marie on 464461 or Janet on 462634 to know more.

After a long period of time without a vicar the Reverend Simon Glynn will be licensed as Priest in Charge of Christ Church and Priest in Charge of All Saints Appley Bridge on 29th April at Christ Church.
Simon comes to Parbold from St John the Baptist, Burscough where he has been curate for the past five years; he is married to Claire and they have two sons. You may have seen Simon around the village as the family prepare to move into the vicarage, do make yourself known to him, the children at school are already on very friendly terms with him.

Frogs need help!  More garden ponds are needed to help the declining population of amphibians due to

habitat  loss.  It is estimated that half of the one million  ponds found in the countryside 100 years ago has disappeared. Frogs are good for gardens – their diet  includes slugs, ants and woodlice !  However the RSPCA have asked people not to move frogspawn from their ponds to other areas as this can spread disease. “It is really important to let the spawn achieve a natural balance – the chances of eggs surviving is very low and tadpoles are a vital food source for many creatures.’  More advice can be found at www.froglife.org ‘Froglife’

are running a campaign called ‘Just Add Water’.   (Parbold Wildlife Group – Secretary 462909)

Text Box: Rail Travel Update for April - BEWARE buying through Advance tickets for Parbold The very cheapest ones may only cost £1 more than from Wigan, but you will normally find a better range from Wigan, with Parbold fares frequently costing about £8 more each way even when they are offered. A single from Parbld to Wigan only costs £3.10.
The line North on Saturdays and Sundays is closed beyond Lockerbie on Saturdays, Carlisle on Sundays until 16th May. Travelling to Birmingham on Sundays a diversion will add about half an hour to the journey from Wigan: with poor connectional times there consider travelling via Manchester instead for the South Coast and SW.
On Easter Saturday and Sunday AVOID WIGAN NORTHWEST. Travel south via Manchester, but there are no train beyond Rugby, and perhaps north via Bolton
AVOID parking at Wigan NW for the next year if possible: the building of a new car park means a 15 minute walk to an alternative site. David Gelder, Tel. 01257 462716
