The Alpha Course
An opportunity to explore the meaning of life Who is running the course? The course is being run by a number of Christians living in the Hallingburys and who are members of a wide variety of local churches. When and where? Details for each Alpha course in the Hallingburys is advertised in local magazines/newsletters prior to start dates. The first Hallingbury Alpha course started on Tuesday 24 February 2004 and ran for 12 weeks on Tuesday evenings, with a two week break at Easter. It began with a supper and "taster evening" in the Little Hallingbury village hall and subsequent evenings were held in homes of people in the village. What does a typical evening consist of? 7.00 to 7.45PM: A simple meal together 7.45 to 8.30PM: A video presentation of a particular aspect of the Christian faith 8.30 to 8.45PM: Coffee break 8.45 to 9.30PM: Small group discussion of that evening's topic The evening will be brought to a close at 9:30PM prompt, but guests are welcome to stay and chat if they so wish. Who is Alpha for? Alpha is for anyone - whether or not they have a faith Everyone is welcome on an Alpha course and people attend for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any purpose to life; others are concerned about what happens after death. Still others may have attended church on and off all their lives but feel they want to deepen their experience of the Christian faith. People come from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints - but all come with the same overall objective: to establish whether Jesus Christ has any real relevance for their lives. Alpha is being run by churches all over the world of every different denomination, including Anglican, Roman Catholic, Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Pentecostal, Salvation Army, Free Church and House Churches. Wherever the course is being held, all churches provide the same material. How do I register for the course? You may register for the Alpha course by contacting the Little and Great Hallingbury PCC secretaries. Leading up to New Alpha courses, newly appointed leaders would happily recieve enquiries. It would be helpful if you would register by 2 weeks prior to the starting date so that we can plan the catering arrangements. What will it cost? The Alpha course is free. Guests will have an opportunity to make a contribution towards the cost of the meal, but this is entirely voluntary. |
