Saturday began in the beautiful Blackfriars Priory with registration and the opportunity to get together and try out the stock of Charles Wells tabor pipes that had been borught for sale. This was followed by a practice for the Big Dub, massed piping and taboring, to be performed several times in the streets and at the Fountain Inn. This year along side the old faithfuls, Queens Delight and Shepherd Hey ... traditionally played as unison as possible, two new multi voiced items were added. Dennis Sherman from Chicago had brought along an arrangement of Summer Is Icumin In arranged as a 6 part round against a bass line and Terry Carter had provided a two part version of Susato's Dance of Hercules. Both of which were great fun. Although massed playing indoors is an acquired taste it does give the opportunity for the lower pipes to be heard, massed pipes outdoors is rather special. |
Concert In BlackfriarsA concert entitled Music and Dance of the Renaissance was given by the Staffordshire Youth Recorder and Renaissance Ensemble. The music was brilliantly performed on an array of early instruments, including bagpipes, vielle, lute, rebec and curtal as well as tabor pipes. The rapport between Terry Carter, the director and the ensemble was a joy to behold, and some of the last minute arrangements required as a result of an early arrival of a colleague's baby were handled with great maturity. |
Concert - Christ's Church, Brunswick SquareA concert, entitled " From Shakespeare to Madrid " was held in the beautiful setting of Christ's Church. |
