Raised on the headland to change worn points

Combining the rape in Holts Lane was a bonus yesterday. Precious sunshine has helped us make the hay, but not yet bale it; ripened the rape and allowed us to finish ploughing and cultivating the set-aside in RE27. Even the light showers today have not dampened my overall contentment that harvest is finally here. Rain should not have damaged the hay too much as we turned it into thick rows ready for the baler. Forecasting of weather is becoming more refined each year, so the normal weather delays can be planned for with several jobs waiting to be done we will always have something to do.

Emergency repairs to a tooth today by the dentist had me driving about collecting spare parts for the tractor and enjoying a long cup of coffee, whilst Derek and Dad got on with the work. Careful use of my labour resources often results in me taking the ‘late shift’ and working into the night; but it does always appear to day visitors that I am reading the newspaper whilst the ‘old uns’ do all of the work.

The prospects for a busy and dry weekend look promising, so we must take rest and recuperation when we can. Perfect!

Manic harvesting and very late nights have seen us grabbing the harvest in between the rain showers and storms. We have finished all of the OSR

(about 2.8 tonnes/ha) and the Solstice winter wheat (about 7.4 tonnes/ha) and have disked and pressed most of the stubbles.

Who? Me?

I managed to ‘nudge’ an electricity post, much to the amusement of my neighbours.

Not too many kids about, but the horses have been tempted to trespass on our set-aside strips; not a lot of physical damage but I fail to see why I should provide free passage to livery stable owners who charge the participants richly for their ‘hack out’.

School Vandalism?

Called into school on one wet morning; a bad move which raised my blood pressure. The ‘so called’ management have converted the staff work room into offices over the summer holiday. We were told about it at midday on the last day of term; a good time to bury bad news. Watch this space!
