We are the only school in Co Tyrone to have video conferencing
equipment.
Its use continues to expand across the curriculum. Conferencing links
have been made with other schools in N Ireland as well as Eire, England
and a number of European countries. Listed below are some video conferencing
subjects, which took place during the academic year 2000

a) Drug Abuse – linked with local Universities, Politicians and schools
in N Ireland.
b) Language Development – linked with French students studying at Magee
College
University, Londonderry on a weekly basis to develop our pupils
language skills.
c) Careers Convention – a full weekend using video conferencing and email;
communicating with local colleges and universities
as well as institutions of
possible employment e.g. Hospitals Local Government
etc.
d) Cross-community - links with other schools in Eire, communicating
on a variety
of topics with pupils and staff in the republic
of Ireland’s border county schools.
e) A community resource – we have other schools in our community which
uses this
resource for a variety of purposes. Our Lady of
Mercy High School for Girls
(Strabane) have used video conferencing as part
of their ‘European Studies’
program, talking to schools in Norway and Sweden.

INTERNATIONAL NET WEEK
St. Joseph's High School, Plumbridge, was the only school in Northern
Ireland that was involved in the International Net Week in October 1999.
Each school involved was allocated a full day and was called 'Netday 99'.
This week involved schools and other educational institutions communicating
through video-conferencing, email, and faxing. St. Joseph's linked
to three other schools, one in Portugal, one in France and one in England
during the 'Netday 99' to discuss everything and anything of interest.
Pupils and staff learnt about the life styles and cultural differences
between the communities. Plumbridge being a very remote rural area, were
able to give an insight into the life of an individual who lives in such
an area compared to those in other countries and settings whether it is
rural or urban. This Net Week was co-ordinated by staff from Magee College,
Ulster University in Derry through Sarah Quilty. Mr. Strong, the Principal
of St. Joseph’s is fully supported this initiative in education.
As part of the initial organisation of St. Joseph's Netday, Mr. Strong
and Sarah Quilty organised a morning session on the 30th of July to make
contact with the partner schools to discuss details on how the Day should
be organised, what information should be exchanged, which staff and pupils
should be involved and the subjects or topics that should be discussed.
The accompanying photographs show the staff computer video linked with
Boston Spa Comprehensive School in Leeds having discussions about the Netday.
If you would like further information about our 'Netday 99', you can
contact
Sarah Quilty or
if you would like further information about St. Joseph's
High Schools involvement then contact Gerry
