PE & SPORT
The school follows the Northern Ireland Curriculum guidelines for P.E.
The general aim of St. Joseph's is to develop an awareness and understanding
of the benefits of good health; enjoyment and socialising that are gained
from participating in a variety of sporting activities both in the school
and in the community. The P.E. Department offer a full range of games and
activities to both boys and girls ie
Athletics, Gymnastics, Basketball, Soccer, Badminton, Swimming, Cross-country
Volleyball, Dance/Aerobics, Tennis, Gaelic Football, Netball.
St Joseph's emply professional coaches for soccer and Gaelic.
Pupils have also the opportunity to do Outdoor Pursuits at the W.E.L.B.
Centre.
As well as normal P.E. classes pupils have the option to participate
in the following team activities outside of class time:
Gaelic Football (boys & girls) - Tyrone Vocational Schools League
and Championships.
Netball - W.E.L.B. - Leagues and Championships
Soccer - U13 and U15 Leagues and Cups in the Derry & District Schools
F.A.
Athletics - District, County & Ulster Championships and other associated
competitions held annually.
Cross-country - District and Ulster Championships held annually.
The school has recently introduced classes in Karate and it is proving
very popular.
As well as competing in competitions outside school the pupils have
the chance to compete against each other in games and activities held on
an annual basis within the school:
1. Sports Day
2. Indoor Soccer Competitions
3. Cross-country
4. Tennis tournaments
5. Soccer tournaments
6. Orienteering
7. Junior & Senior Gaelic Football Tournaments
The school has successfully introduced the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
with many of our pupils achieving bronze or silver awards.
For a school of St. Joseph's size the P.E. Department is proud of its
past and offers every pupil the opportunity to fulfil his/her potential
within a safe and enjoyable programme of activities both in and out of
