GCSE OPTION - TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN

This is a practical type of course were skills that are learned
in the lower school are extended and new skills and knowledge learnt. The
course is structured around practical problem-solving activities in which
pupils have to design and make solutions to problems. Pupils are required
to make decisions, communicate their ideas by sketching, writing and discussion,
and finally make their solution in suitable materials. Pupils will have
to test their solutions to see how well they work, and find it both interesting
and challenging, catering for pupils of all abilities.
Assessment
The requirements of the Technology and Design course is as follows
1) A Main Project realised in a resistant material incorporating a
system which can be electrical, mechanical or pneumatic. |
| 2) A Portfolio on the project containing research & designs. |
| 3) Two 'Focused Tasks' on any aspect of T&D. |
| 4) Theory Examination. |
FOR THE FUTURE
A good grade at GCSE is always desirable when entering any of the skills
training courses leading to NVQ's. With a good grade, A Level can be studied,
and taken further if desired. The course opens the door to a wide range
of careers and further studies related to Design, Manufacturing and Service
Industries to degree level. Colleges offer courses in Interior Design,
Product Design, Advertising, Teaching, Civil Engineering &
Engineering Design. Careers in
Carpentry/Joinery, Furniture, Display, Television props & scenery,
Exhibition Designer.
