GCSE OPTION - PHYSICAL EDUCATION

| This subject is available as an extension to the curriculum time provision.
It is aimed at those pupils who have a natural flair/talent for physical
education and are committed to a career that would require this subject
at GCSE level or above. The limited number of pupils who wish to enrol
on this course would have to be approved by those staff teaching them as
it would mean such pupils having an extra GCSE subject to study.
Assessment
The components are weighted as follows
| a) 2 Terminal Examinations, each carrying 20% of the marks |
| b) Practical Activities 60%
Pupils are assessed on four activities chosen from the categories below

Athletics

Fitness Training
|
Dance
|
|
Gymnastics
|
. |
Life Saving
|
|
Games 1 (eg, Gaelic football, soccer, basketball, etc.)
|
|
Games 2 (eg, Badminton, volleyball, etc.)
|

FOR THE FUTURE
The GCSE course can be studied further at 'A' level.
Manv further and higher level courses look favourably on candidates
who have obtained a good grade at GCSE. The sports and leisure industry
is a rapidly expanding growth area in the ‘job market’ and there are a
large variety of careers available linked to Physical Education which include
Recreational Management, Sports and Leisure Instructors, Teaching, Occupational
Therapy, Sports Journalism, and Physiotherapy.
