AIMS OF THE SCHOOL

General
St Joseph's High School serves local parishes boundaries that include Dunamanagh, Gortin, Greencastle, Newtownstewart, Strabane and Plumbridge by providing a caring and supportive education based on Christian principles. Within St. Joseph1s individual pupils will be able to seek and achieve the fullest spiritual, personal, creative/aesthetic, social and academic development of which he/she is capable. Our Mission Statement reflects these aims and philosophy. 

Aim 1
To provide a Catholic education through which each pupil can understand and develop religious and moral values by: 
(a) acquiring knowledge and understanding of their own religious beliefs and practices 
(b) acquiring a degree of confidence and self-esteem 
(c) appreciating the different religions in our community 
(d) understanding that there are mora4 social, and lawful forms of behaviour in their lives and in their relationships with others that they should practise. 

Aim 2
Through the Common Curriculum and within a rewarding, enjoyable and stimulating school environment, help pupils develop those concepts, skills and knowledge which enable them to live in an ever changing world by having access to the following seven areas of study 
(a)English 
(b)Mathematics 
(c)Science and Technology 
(d)The Environment and Society, 
(e)Creative and Expressive Studies
(f) Language Studies 
(g)Moral/Ethical/Spiritual Studies. 

Aim3
To give each pupil the opportunity to fufil his/her potential, personally and socially 
for his/her present and future life by: 
(a) developing the capability of independent thought and initiative 
(b) developing the ability to express themselves in a variety of situations 
(c) developing the ability to be an effective member of a group. 

Aim 4
To help the pupils understand their place in society in relation to other people by permitting them to: 
(a) acquire a sense of responsibility for the improvement of society and be able to make a thoughtful contribution to it; 
(b) appreciate the causes and effects of prejudice and discrimination; 
(c) appreciate their local and national heritage and culture, and be encouraged to preserve and develop them; 
(d) have an understanding of society; 
(e) appreciate the factors that contribute to health and safety.
