The Gateway Members' Committee
It was decided recently that a new members committee was needed for our Gateway
Club and who better to choose than our own members. We received twenty peoples'
names for eight places. On Wednesday 14 August each member attending the club
was given a voting form showing each prospective committee member with their
photograph, name and a box to put a cross. Eighty two forms were returned in
the ballot box. A better turnout than the General Election! (Only actual members
could vote not volunteers or carers.)
The final results were announced at the club on Wednesday 21st August and the
2002 members committee are as follows:
David
Fawkes 48 votes
Paul Wadrop 48 votes
Janet Kerwin 47 votes
Yvonne Renicor 43 votes
Peter Jeffrey 40 votes
Paul Hughes 36 votes
Kelly Toner 36 votes
Nicola Williamson 34 votes
Everyone who put their names forward for the committee got a large number of
votes, so well done to you all and thank you everyone who voted.
What is Middlesbrough Gateway Club?

- Introduction
- The Federation of Gateway Clubs was founded by MENCAP in 1966 and deals
with all aspects of leisure.
- Where is it held?
- Because we have so many members we hold our Gateway Club at Lothian Road
Day Centre, Lothian Road, Middlesbrough.

the karaoke. We have a disco, arts & crafts, adult literacy, pen

- You can contact the Middlesbrough Mencap
& Gateway Head Office at Southlands Centre, Ormesby Road, Middlesbrough
Tel (01642) 318317 or just come on a Wednesday evening from 7.00pm to 9.00pm
to Lothian Road Centre. Ask for George or Debbie.
- How much will it cost?
- There is a 70 pence fee to pay on the door per person. There are also canteen
facilities so you can enjoy tea, coffee or soft drink.
We look forward to meeting you.
We've got rather a lot of pictures of people enjoying themselves at the Gateway
Club. We'd like to share them with you, but don't
want to overburden the main page.
A
Ray of Hope
The Gateway Club had an unofficial visit from a local V.I.P. last
month. The Mayor of Middlesbrough, Ray Mallon called in to see us. He had, originally,
been invited by Paul Hughes and it was great that he took him up on it. He spent
well over an hour in Lothian Road meeting our members and volunteers and sampling
the hectic atmosphere of our Wednesday night crowd!
Art Project 2001
A 26 week Awards for All funded project culminated in a public exhibition
in a shopping mall. Read about it here
The
Gateway Recipe Book
We have put together a favourite recipe book with our members contributing in
some way either with special recipes that they enjoy or with artwork for the book.
This was a mammoth task but we feel a worthwhile one. The end results will be
made available to all Gateway Clubs nationwide.
UPDATE: The Gateway to Cookery book
is now ready, and went on sale at our exhibition in the Cleveland Centre May
28 to June 2. Now available price £2 including post and packaging - £1
if you collect. Selling like hot cakes (see page 49) - priority given
to Gateway members and their supporters.
Still a few left - ideal Xmas presents

In a previous art project, 6 members built a three-dimensional Underwater Themed
Work of Art over a period of eight weeks.
Special Olympics In America
Gateway members Stephen Johnson and Douglas Wilson went to America in 2000
to play football.
They
were part of the British team attending the World Summer International Games in
North Carolina. They both gained special silver dollars after winning over Monaco
4-0.
65,000 people saw the opening ceremony. The UK team won 60 gold medals, 59 silver
and 31 bronze during the games. The five-a-side lads won one, drew two and lost
four games, but were asked back for the Monaco match after being judged the friendliest
team.
