We pass on to you sources of valuable advice taken from various publications

We recently received correspondence from Endeavour Housing Association informing us of an exciting new housing project for people with physical disabilities and sensory loss.
Six one-bedroomed, purpose built, self-contained bungalows are being built on the land next to the Lansdowne Centre in Middlesbrough which will provide temporary accommodation for people while the develop the skills necessary to live in their own permanent accommodation. The scheme will include a staff office and a communal meeting place and we anticipate that the project will be ready for occupation in autumn 2000.
If you know of anyone who may be interested in the scheme please contact Cairine Fotheringham at Endeavour Housing Association, 1 Grange Road, Middlesbrough TS1 5BA Tel. No. 01642 241391. Alternatively, leave your name and address with Sue Turner at the same number, who will send you an application pack.

Help For Disabled Travellers
We have received information from both SAGA Magazine (July 2000) and Tees Valley Briefing (July 2000) about TRIPSCOPE

For the price of a local telephone call, TRIPSCOPE (a registered charity) gives disabled people all the information, advice, support and encouragement they need to make journeys with confidence, at home and abroad.
TRIPSCOPE’s helpline was the brainchild of Claudia Flanders, widow of entertainer Michael Flanders who was a wheelchair user. She had the task of helping Michael travel around the world. She believed that disabled people should not be hindered by lack of accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive information and her experience subsequently led to the setting up of TRIPSCOPE to enable thousands of disabled people to have the same travel aspirations as everyone else.
Whatever the disability, whatever the destination, TRIPSCOPE’s information staff, all of whom have personal experience of a disability themselves, are happy to talk through the worries and problems so many disabled travellers still have when planning a journey, whether it is just round the corner or around the world.
TRIPSCOPE is at 08457 585641 during normal office hours or e-mail tripscopesw@cableinet.co.uk

Tripscope and Co-op Travelcare have produced an information pack which provides practical advice on travelling for people with impaired mobility.
The pack is part of Co-op Travelcare’s Traveller’s Rights to Know customer service policy.
It includes basic information to help with journey planning, insurance and medical preparations, travelling, and in-resort accommodation.
To order a copy send a 13” x 9” stamped addressed envelope (40p) to:

‘One for Us’ Web Site
Self advocates in Cambridge have launched the first national web site for people with learning disabilities.
Speaking Up! the Cambridge based group launched One for Us as a national information forum.
The site has sections on health, housing, leisure, money, work and relationships. It will include life stories of people with learning disabilities and encourage people to add comments and news.
One for Us differs from sites such as Mencap.org.uk because it does not cater for parents or professionals. It is a national site and is not about one organisation and is designed for easy use all the way through.
