George Smith, Chairman, Middlesbrough Mencap, with his Certificate of Commendation as runner-up for Middlesbrough Citizen of the Year

I would like to add my congratulations to the many others George must have received on his recent nomination as Middlesbrough’s Citizen of the Year 2000. George is certainly a very worthy nominee.
Anne Twizell

Following on from our story in June, George went along to the Town Hall and was presented with his Certificate of Commendation, pictured here in the Mencap office.

Well Done Erimus
Our hearty congratulations go to The Erimus Centre for winning the Evening Gazette’s Win a Minibus competition recently. They were chosen from a short-list of four finalists as the winner of the £22,000 Ford Transit minibus.
Well done everyone who worked so very hard to collect the tokens necessary. We hope it will bring many years of pleasure to all who use it.

Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy Talk

Well Done Gateway Members
Didn’t we do well? During Adult Learners Week, held at the end of May, Gateway members Diane Mclintock and Jady Baig were nominated for individual adult learner awards, and the Happy Talk Pen Pals for a group award. Diane and the pen pal group had their certificates presented by the Mayor of Middlesbrough at a special presentation event in the Southlands Centre. An extra- special presentation event was held at the Gateway Club where Jady was presented with his framed certificate and individual certificates were presented to the Happy Talk members.

We would like to say a very big thank you to the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales who kindly gave us a donation of £4,000 for the purchase of a laser printer and cartridges. It will certainly be put to good use and, hopefully, improve our newsletters.
