After studying at the École Polytechnique in Paris, Pissis later specialised in the stratigraphy and economic geography of South America. Geological research in Bolivia was interrupted by political events and in 1848 Pissis settled in Chile to become, in 1876, head of the newly founded geographical section of the Chilean Statistical Office. Pissis is known for his work on land registration maps of various Chilean provinces, for his establishment of the boundary between Chile and Bolivia in the Atacama Desert, and for his numerous contributions to the Annales des Mines and other scientific journals.
