| Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is a syndrome where a person with epilepsy dies suddenly and no other cause of death is revealed. Often the person dies alone in their sleep. The excess mortality is greatest amongst young adults. One of the difficulties in this area is that presumed but unsubstantiated mechanisms are sometime registered as the cause of death e.g. suffocation or status epilepticus or that the death is registered as unascertained so that the exact number of deaths falling within the category of SUDEP is not known. |
