Epilepsy Bereaved Call to Action

“Epilepsy Bereaved welcomes recent government initiatives aimed at improving the treatment of people with epilepsy and is also hopeful of the commitment announced in this report by four Chief Medical Officers across the UK for action. We hope that this report will make a difference at the point where the person with epilepsy makes contact with their local health service if we are to offer any hope to the bereaved families who have been at the heart of this report”

We believe

 1.  Any national action must make real change

National target for reduction of deaths
National Confidential Enquiry into Epilepsy Deaths
Local Epilepsy Audit

2.  The report is a wake-up call which must be heard

Epilepsy awareness for GPs and all non-specialists
Epilepsy awareness for general public

3.  Local action can start now

Review or establish review of local epilepsy services using eg JEC Statement of Good Practice

The importance of early diagnosis

Quick access to a specialist with knowledge of epilepsy Access to specialist nurses and to voluntary sector

Fast-track when someone needs to be seen again
Coordination between all professionals –GPs and specialists
Essential records check list
Advice to people and families

4.  Any review must include risks and safety assessments for people with epilepsy

5.  The trauma of bereaved relatives following a sudden death should be reduced through:

Proper investigation of deaths
Access to information
Contact with health professionals after the death
Access to voluntary sector for help
