Discipline and dismissal - learning outcomes

It is intended that, at the end of the workshop, participants will:

accept the advantages of tackling discipline problems sooner rather than later
understand and be able to use a frame work for "having a word"
be able to exercise reasonable control over appropriate behaviour in the workplace

have a basic understanding of the following terms

Dismissal
Resignation
Breach of contract/ gross misconduct/summary dismissal
Constructive dismissal

know the five potentially fair reasons for dismissal
appreciate the difference between conduct and capability issues.
recognise the serious difficulties involved in effecting capability dismissals
know what "acting reasonably" implies

appreciate the importance of following the procedure
appreciate the need for full documentation
know the steps in their own disciplinary procedure
know the principles of natural justice

be able to conduct a fair disciplinary hearing
be able to prepare an outline script for the act of dismissal

be confident to act where appropriate and assess accurately when further advice is needed.

Attendance management - learning outcomes

It is intended that, at the end of the workshop, participants will:

take ownership of absence problems and act responsibly
Create a working environment where responsible attitudes to business needs are respected

be able to tackle minor absence problems by "nipping them in the bud"
be able to handle a telephone conversation where an employee telephones in with an absence reason.

be able to carry out a "return to work" interview, informally but effectively

respond appropriately to absence generally, taking account of frequency, extent and circumstances

appreciate the importance of keeping sufficient records
appreciate the implications of current legislation, including disability discrimination, in relation to attendance management
be able to explain the potentially fair reasons for dismissal and be able to distinguish between capability and conduct, and hence between disciplinary and ill-health issues
recognise the relevance of medical evidence
know where to find suitable sources of reference to assist with difficult issues arising on future occasions

Teamworking for employees - learning outcomes

It is intended that, at the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify task, process and personal behaviour in themselves and others
Recognise how teams make decisions
Adopt group behaviour that is appropriate to any particular team situation
Recognise the development stages in team formation
Respond appropriately to the development stage that a team may be working through
Recognise, and have an appropriate judgement of, their own strengths
Demonstrate greater confidence
within their team
in proposing solutions to company problems

Participants will complete an Action Plan of activities they plan do to when back in the workplace.

write an advertisement that will attract, interest and lead to applications from the right candidates.
prepare a shortlist, identifying the best candidates.
