If you are a fan of European racing, and in particular the short oval variety, the names General, Leapy
and Leo may well start ringing bells. But for those who’s bells remain silent, prepare to be enlightened.
The names General, Leapy and Leo all have a common suffix and that’s ‘Lee’, ‘Barry Lee’.
Still none the wiser? Let me expand on it then. Barry’s motorsport career has spanned over thirty years, during which time he has driven virtually everything that ever had wheels and a go pedal. From ‘the’ first ever Rallycross in a Ford Anglia to Truck racing (proper Trucks, 6 Ton Trucks, not pick- ups), from Super Stocks to the Dakar Rally and from Hot Rods to his latest demonstration in excellence ‘Eurocar V6’ and now ‘V8’.
Barry’s enthusiasm and determination has won him some 1,400 trophies (No, it’s not a typing error. Yes I really did say one thousand, four hundred!), among which are some pretty impressive inscriptions. How about the ones which read “British Rallycross Champion” and “British Truck racing champion”. Not impressed? OK Well what about “World Hot Rod Champion” (he has four of these!), or perhaps the two “Eurocar Champion” examples. Take your pick, there must be at least one there that causes a quickening of the heart rate and just a twinge of jealousy.
Barry is a champion, but he is the first to admit that the skill of the driver is not the only factor in winning races. You must have a car that can deliver what you want, when you want it, and from the start to the chequered flag, time and time again. Isn’t that right Damon? Which is why he has a long association with Burton’s.
Now I’m not going to tell you that Burton built the winning Truck engine, or that there was a Burton logo on every car that Barry’s driven., No, that would be telling porkies, but I will tell you that Barry won his four World Hot Rod Championships and the British Rallycross Championship in Burton Engine’d / prepared cars. I will tell you that the Burton Logo has appeared on nearly all of Mr Lee’s Ford racecars, Anglia’s, Escort’s (of various engine types) and even a Trans-Am.
Taking all of the above into consideration is it any wonder that Barry is now making his mark on the Eurocar scene or that the Burton name appears along with the likes of Wynns and Hewlett Packard on the front, back and sides of his latest V8 monster. |

P.S. I almost forgot. He’s also used two wheels and no brakes. Speedway of course! | |
