About 20 miles east from Carcassonne and 30 miles west of Beziers as are the Mediterranean beaches near Narbonne. The heights of the Pyrenees and Massif Centrale are both within easy driving distance. There is a wide variety of things to do in the area including wine tasting at the numerous chateaux in the area, many fascinating local market - one every day of the week in summer - including the Halles du Marche in Narbonne (Rick Stein loved it when he featured it in his recent TV series on the Canal du Midi) and don't forget the flower market in Beziers. Beziers and Narbonne have wonderful indoor markets every day of the week and it is an experience in itself to wander through and see all the magnificent vegetables, fish of every variety imaginable, meat, charcuterie, breads and pastries, wine and olive oil, and of course, the incomparable cheeses.The Canal du Midi is only 3 kms away and offers many beautiful walks and cycle rides as well as the opportunity for lazy days spent cruising in the dappled shade on one of the many boats for hire! The area offers extensive sporting opportunities - Lac de Jouarres where one can windsurf, sail and fish as well as swim from the lake beach is only 5 minutes drive. The Mediterranean beaches are only 40 minutes away. Golf can be arranged at Carcassonne. There are five Championnat rugby clubs within easy travelling distance (Narbonne, Beziers, Montpellier, Perpignan and Toulouse!) - the season lasts from the end of August until early June so there's plenty of opportunity to see a good game! If you're interested in history or have read the da Vinci Code or this year's blockbuster, Labyrinthe, then Le Vieux Relais is the place to stay! The house is equidistant from Carcassonne, Beziers and Narbonne and only 15 minutes from Minerve and there is a reference in Labyrinthe, which takes the reader right past the front door! For those interested in archaeology, there is a fascinating Gallo-Roman hilltop village near, overlooking the Etang de Montardy, an area of drained lake which has been kept thus since the 12th century. There are also many historical places of interest within easy reach - Cathar castles and both Carcassonne and Narbonne are only half an hour away. |

Thoughtfully
furnished guest accommodations with mostly king-size beds, en-suite
bathrooms or shower rooms, and easy chairs - central heating provides a
comfortable environment in the cooler months and ceiling fans add
greatly to your comfort in the summer heat. One of the guest bedrooms
is on the ground floor overlooking the courtyard making it ideal for
less able guests who find it difficult to climb stairs. There is also a
suite which is particularly suitable for families with small children
as the second bedroom can only be accessed through the master bedroom. 1&2: Two
mini-suites on the top floor offer luxury wet rooms, separate dressing
area, seating area and king size beds; an extra bed can be provided in
the screened off dressing area for families with an older child. There is a
very relaxing guest lounge available year round with satellite TV and
plenty of books. Le Vieux Relais is also available for
rent on a fully catered basis, in its entirety by the week during the
months of June, July, August and September. There are seven bedrooms,
six bathrooms (5 ensuite) sleeping up to 13 adults and 3 children.

Picnic lunches made up of fresh local produce are available to order at 10 euros per person, homemade hot soup is included in winter. Pepieux is a medium size village with a grocer cum butcher shop, a small ladies dress shop, a pharmacy, a post office, a news agent, a very good bakery with bread baked on the premises and a bar. Every weekday there are different vans in the square, selling anything from fabrics to flowers to meat and fish. This is a busy wine producing village and the workers keep at it, spraying, pruning and tending the vines in various ways - wine production is very labour intensive! From

may take the unique and fascinating Little Yellow Train for a breath
taking
trip through the Pyrenees to Spain and nearer home, there is a little
train
which runs from Narbonne through pretty countryside to a village with
an
excellent restaurant . There is excellent, well-lit parking right outside the house next to the church. Please note this is
a no smoking house and pets are not accepted. Open all year. |
