Todd Returns

Colin Todd (Sunderland) has returned to Derby County as assistant manager to Jim Smith (Boston United). Colin is perhaps best remembered as a Derby County player - having moved there from Sunderland during the 1970-71 season (in February 1971). He went on to play nearly 300 League games there before moving on to Everton in 1978. Todd went on to get a reputation as a manager particularly at Bolton Wanderers, but has recently been at Swindon Town. Swindon are none too chuffed about the affair at there was speculation in the press that they would be taking matters further. See http--www.dcfc.co.uk-press-index.asppr_id=1184

Homepages

There's two more homepages of player/managers of the 1970-71 to enjoy. Pele (Star players of Mexico 1970) has an official site pele.net, which is launched today, and Brian Clough (Derby County manager) has an unofficial site at www.brianclough.com . See more players' sites on the Links page.

The Red Headed Tiger and the Ice Blue Jaguar

No this is not a new children's story, but a news item from this month's 'Leeds Leeds Leeds' magazine for November 2000. Billy Bremner's car with a personalised number plate is up for sale. It reports ...

Billy Bremner's car

Billy Bremner's old car for sale

We're not in the habit of giving away tree advertising space but for this car we'll make an exception. Among its carefull owners, you see, was one Billy Bremner. It's a 1991 Jaguar Sovereign 3,2 litre bearing Billy's own personalise number plate A6 W(illiam) J B(remner). It's in immaculate nick with its gleaming ice blue paintwork wrapped around air conditioning, cruise control and unbridled luxury.

The present owner, Alan Bowden of Doncaster, has just fitted a new set of tyres claims the low mileage figure of 86,000 and says it does an impressive 33 mpg on a run! Which begs the question' why is he selling it' ?

"To tell you the truth, it goes to Meadowhall in Sheffield once a month, and maybe Asda once a week but now the wife does her shopping on the internet it just sits here in the drive. It's a wonderful car but I just don't want to see it go to waste". Point taken.

Alan acquired the car ( bought second hand by Billy who added his own plates) when Billy's widow Vicky sold it a couple of years back

"We saw it advertised in the local paper with Billy's name attached and hurried down there. I'd been after a sports car but once we saw the room inside the Sovereign completely changed our minds and put the 500 pound deposit down there and then".

So, did you tind anything interesting in the car's glove compartment?

"No, but I've looked . I wondered if he might have left an old Championship medal down the back of one of the seats. I've had me hands in every one of them, lifted up the carpets, looked everywhere. I've searched it. believe me !!!".

Alan wants just 8, 900 pounds for the car (including the plates) and you can phone him ( after 5pm ) on 01405 818515 Happy motoring!

World of Soccer Stars England Manager ???

The speculation for Kevin Keegan's replacement as England manager continues ad nauseum. On Sunday, 'The Observer' listed the betting odds for various possible replacements and 6-4 favourite is Terry Venables (QPR). Tezza has, of course been the manager before, and left before there was chance for him to be disgraced.

If I took several years out of my work I would be expected to join a re-start scheme. No such concerns for Terry. A telephone poll printed in 'Sport First on Sunday', having opened its phonelines in the Friday edition, gave Terry 92 per cent of the support for becoming England manager! The paper even began a campaign 'Yell for Tel'!!

Other 70-71 men with odds quoted are Howard Wilkinson 14-1, Arsene Wenger (To be confirmed)16-1, Peter Taylor (Southend) 20-1, Bobby Robson 25-1 and Alex Ferguson 33-1.

Wilko offered the idea that the next World Cup should be abandoned in favour of allowing the youngsters time to develop for the one after - like France did for 1998 (apparantly). He also suggested an old gadger should work with a young pup to groom for the future. Both Bobby Robson (old), and Peter Taylor (young) have said they would be available for this if they were approached.

England Appointment

Whilst all the speculation continues as to who will be the next England manager, caretaker manager has brought in the Leeds United Football Academy director, Brian Kidd (ManU) as his no.2, or is that = no.2, because Stuart Pearce has been brought in to help also.See Leeds United Football Club - The Official Website

Psycho Memories

And talking of Stuart Pearce's encounters with ex-Man United players ... 'The Non League Paper' (September 10, no.25) made much of the fact that West Ham United and ex-England player, Stuart Pearce, began his career by going through the non-League ranks. He played for five and a half years forWealdstone. Pearce, who has a bestselling football biography, 'Psycho' is well known for being one of football's older players - he was 8 at the start of the 70-71 season - but his party piece was to tell people that he played against Alex Stepney (ManU) ! Alex dates from the days when England had four serious contenders for the number one England slot and thus was only capped once. Whilst this may make Pearcey sound older than he is, Alex was nearly 41 at the time and playing for the Alliance side,Altrincham during a Championship winning spell that they had and Pearce was only 18.

Best Advert

George Best has combined his recent appearances in milk and Sky television adverts, by being in an advert for Channel 5' Milkshake programme. The picture which appeared in today's 'The Times' newspaper (and possibly others) showed a present day picture of George with a super-imposed badly drawn white smile over his mouth.'He's just watched 'Milkshake' on Channel Five' runs the slogan. It seems that this is Kids' Zone telly for Channel 5 and is available on Sky digital from 7.30 a.m.. See www.channel5.co.uk/milkshake
The campaign also stars Kevin Keegan - see

Smith Out

Oxford United - bottom of Division Two at present have sacked Dennis Smith (Stoke City). Dennis will not be leaving the club altogether, he will remain on in an advisory capacity, which sounds a lot like Oxford can't afford the compensation pay out !

Webb In

And as reported on 1st October, it was confirmed yesterday that Southend United have appointed David Webb for his third spell as their manager.

1 October

Southend Netted Webb ?

No sooner had Bob's 70-71 Pages caught up with Chelsea Cup Final Goal Hero, David Webb (Chelsea) as manager of Yeovil Town, than he's off again. It is believed Webb has left to manage Southend United- a club he has managed twice before 1986-87, and 1988-92. The news is a huge disappointment for Yeovil Town, who are currently second in the Nationwide Conference League. The announcement came immediately after the sixth successive victory on Saturday, and follows Alan Little's departure (See News). See News from Huish Park

Hurst's Hoard

Shirt Worn by Geoff Hurst for '66 Hatrick

The famous No.10 Shirt that saw a unique World Cup Final Hatrick

Last month Bob's 70-71 pages reported on Sir Geoff Hurst's large sale at Christie's. The sale which was raising money for charity sold for a total of 274,409 pounds. The shirt pictured above was the very one in which he scored the hatrick for England in 1966 and sold for 91,750 pounds. The England cap won for his part in the 1970 World Cup Finals fetched 4,935 (if only I'd had 5,000!). The picture featured in last month's story went for 4,112 pounds. Only 34 of the 129 available lots failed to sell. See Global Sales Results (Location)

Incidentally, a present day Sir Geoff features heavily in Sky's current advert promoting the England v Germany game ... of which more ...

Wemberly, Wemberly

Sir Bobby Charlton's putting his name behind the www.wembly-endofanera.com promotion which has scattered the land with leaflets and adverts during the past month in the build up to this week's last ever game in the famous Stadium. Ten per cent of the proceeds of the sales of gifts and souvenirs is going to the charity NSPCC (The National Society for the Protection of Children).

Wembly End of an Era

It has been my good fortune that my career in football has taken me all over the world, both with Manchester United and with England. As our national game has developed into a global phenomenon, it is fair to say that our beloved Wembley has become the most famous stadium on earth.

Pele called it the “Church of Football” and it has long been every player's dream to play on the hallowed turf. Wembley Stadium has a unique and glorious heritage, and it has served the nation for over 77 years. But it is now the End of an Era, for the time is right to wave a fond farewell and create a new Wembley National Stadium, one that will truly be the finest in the world.

I am sure that the overwhelming majority of fans will agree that Wembley’s most memorable occasion was 30 July 1966, when Bobby Moore so proudly held the World Cup aloft as we celebrated our victory over West Germany. As we now look forward to such an exciting future, let us firstly celebrate the magic of the Wembley we have cherished and loved for so long.

I hope you will join me in sharing this special moment, for the End of an Era is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of soccer history and even bid for your own special piece of Wembley.
