The Angel Billy

The spirit of Billy Bremner has been a busy one, not only was the visitation from Billy the inspiration for this site it (see Online Oddity), he is also the inspiration for a blind Leeds fan in the up and coming film, 'The Penalty King'.

The film featues a back drop of Leeds United in the Seventies, and I believe will include Eddie Gray's classic goal v Burnley, scored in April 1970.

It stars Clare Grogan - who also starred in the World's greatest football film, 'Gregory's Girl' - and was written and directed by Leeds United fan, Chris Cook A film short 'Bury It' has been made to promote it.

If the makers of the film wish to invite me to the Premiere, I will be happy to available !!!!

Trying for a Hit.

It's Chrismas Time ... which means it's time for rubbish Christmas singles. (Does anyone remember a classic Bad News single 'Cashing in On Christmas' ?)

Step forward Big Ron Atkinson, who has decided to add to the festive season with a yuletide offering of his own, 'It's Christmas ... Let's Give Love a Try'.

To be fair to Ron, he actually has a writing credit on the cd single, as it was co-written with musician, Cedric Whitehouse. Also, his singing voice is passable. The odds on it being the Xmas number one are ... rather long.

Let's be thankful for small mercies. It was rumoured that the song was originally going to be a duet with Terry Venables (QPR), who himself had a minor hit before the World Cup with 'England Crazy'.

See Guardian Unlimited Football News It's Christmas, let's give Big Ron a try

Oh 'Ell Tel

Talking of Terry Venables (QPR) two emails doing the rounds ...

Terry Venables is queuing in his local building society, when a gunman bursts in through the door demanding money. Ell Tel attempts to tackle the  raider, but is knocked over. On his way to the floor he knocks his head on  the counter and slumps out cold onto the floor. The robber runs off.

One of the cashiers goes over to Ell Tel and tries to revive him by fanning him with some leaflets - he comes round and looks bewildered. His first words are "where the hell am I?".

The cashier replies, "Don't worry, its ok - you're in the Nationwide."

Ell Tel replies, "Bloody hell, is it May already?!"

And...

Ell Tel and Peter Ridsdale in a restaurant. They eat a huge meal and the waiter came round and asked them if they wanted anything else. Ell Tel relied "No, I can't manage any more", and Peter Ridsdale replied "You're absolutely right there Terry!"

Add to that a cartoon strip in Match magazine in which Ell Tel asks Santa for his Xmas present, so Santa tips out all his Christmas presents and gives Ell the sack...

2D-TV

2D-TV is a favourite in Bob 70-71 Towers, so it was good to see a few Bob 70-71 Footballers featured in the 4th episode from series 3 (First broadcast ITV1, 18 December 2002 at 10-35 pm).

A running joke of 'Friends Reunited' - in which famous people are reunited with someone/thing and after an initial greeting fail to think of anything else to say- featured George Best. He was reunited with his liver, and after a stumbling conversation, things pick up when the liver suggests they go for a drink.

There was also a quick shot of Sir Alex Ferguson greeting Roy Keane. Roy was leaving a room which he had destroyed, after an evidently over enthusiatic anger management session.

And Michael Owen featured as the winner of the 'Goal Celebration of the Month'. This involved Michael leaping crocodiles on a motorbike and landing in a canon that fires him high into the sky. As he sails through the air Michael meets another footballer, 'you scored too?' he asks. 'No', comes the reply, 'I've just been tackled by Roy Keane' ...

See 2DTV, which currently has a picture that includes Sven-Göran Eriksson (Degerfors) and Michael Owen under 'Pictures' in the England squad.

Best Award

George Best won the lifetime achievement award at this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. This is only the second time the honour has been awarded, the first was Sir Alex Ferguson, last year's winner (see December 2001).

So to win it helps to have both Manchester United and Bob 70-71 connections ... Sir Bobby Charlton next year then ! Nobby Stiles in 2004?!

Though his team in 70-71 is not known, Arsčne Wenger is more than likely due a place on this site, and he won the Coach of the Year Award at the same ceremony.
