Top Bobby

Bit slow to report this, but last night saw Sir Winston Churchill be voted as Great Britain's greatest, er, Briton, which wasn't my vote, but certainly is one I can live with.

Before being narrowed down to a top ten for the vote, a top 100 was compliled out of an earlier vote. This 100 contained just two footballers, David Beckham at number 33 and Bob 70-71 star, Bobby Moore at number 69.

At number 36, Sir Steve Redgrave the 5 time Olympic Gold rower was the only other Sportsman in the list.

As Beckham had a fan-led vote, which also saw the likes of Robbie Williams and Michael Crawford being unrealistically high, I think Bobby gets the highest place for football achievements alone.

Whilst I don't deny Bobby was a Sixties icon, it is doubtless the association of Bobby with the England World Cup win that has made his contribution to football mean more to voters than any other footballer that could have been voted for. So, well done, Bobby !

Rofe and Cooper Southampton Update

Good to see Southampton beat Premiership Champions and present leaders Arsenal 3-2 yesterday. The television highlights showed Denis Rofe (Orient) on the Southampton bench, and I see from the official website he is now in the role as First Team Coach. Whilst there I also saw that Terry Cooper still has his role as European Scout.

One additional person to report is that Garry Pendrey (Birmingham City) is the Assistant manager, and has been since Gordon Strachen took over as manager on 22 October 2002. It seems that prior to this Garry had been Gordon's assistant at Coventry City, too.

And whilst I'm on a roll, though not confirmed on the Official site, On the Cross run by Bob 70-71 friend, Christian Kelly, reports that Mike Lyons (Everton) is presentlyYouth Coach at Southampton's Perth Academy !

Lashings of Support

Peter Lorimer is proving to be Terry Venables' (QPR) biggest Fan. Peter has a regular column in the local newspaper,'The Yorkshire Evening Post' and commentates on Leeds United matches for Radio Leeds. Peter is also the current holder of the Special Bob Award for 2002.

He may also soon be offered the role as honoury President of the Terry Venables fan club as rarely does he miss a moment to offer the fellow Bob 70-71 Star his moral support.

Good for you Peter !

Peter argues intelligently that Terry has inherited many problems from David O'Leary's days at the club, and that Terry should be given more time to make his influence at the club.

NB The management of Bob and 1970-71 Footballers would like to point out that it does not necessarily agree with all the views of the footballers featured on the site. Let's face it, David Icke is one of them !

This appeared on the BBC site recently to illustrate the point, click on the link to hear Peter talk his point in person. See BBC SPORT Football Teams Leeds United Lorimer backs Venables

Leeds legend Peter Lorimer believes Terry Venables will turn the club around and has called on the club's supporters to back him.

Lorimer said Venables had inherited a club which was in a downward spiral and needed to sell players.

But he was confident Venables could halt the slide, which has seen the team win only one Premiership game in the last seven.

Sunday's 4-2 defeat to struggling Bolton Wanderers kept them anchored in mid-table - with many fans calling for Venables' head - but Lorimer said they should not panic yet.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "Terry looked to be turning the corner after a few good results, including the Uefa Cup win against Hapoel Tel Aviv last week.

"But he was missing 10 internationals against Bolton and had to field a weakened side.

"These things happen when you are down there. He has not become a bad coach overnight. He needs time and patience to do the job.

"When he took over Leeds it was a difficult situation. The club was in a downward slide and had spent a lot of money.

"When Terry came in he could not spend; in fact the first thing he had to do was sell."

Lorimer is confident Venables has the managerial skills to halt the club's poor run of form.

"I am sure he has plans when the transfer window opens in January to strengthen the squad.

"He will want players out and one or two in. He has to be given that chance and fans must be patient to see what he does after January."

But the Elland Road legend dismissed suggestions that striker Alan Smith could be sold.

"Every club will be eyeing him up and when a team is down and a bit vulnerable it happens.

"But Alan is a Leeds boy and loves Leeds. I'd be amazed if he left."

Lorimer thinks that midfielder David Batty, out of favour, and defender Michael Duberry will be the players shown the door in January.

"This is not going to get better overnight.

"Terry has key players out until the new year so the problem will be with him for quite a while."

Arise Sir Bobby ....

Thank you Lizzy, Mam, who's your favourite 70's footballer then ?~~~... What, what ??? Oh sorry I was daydreaming that I was being knighted ... again ! Nevertheless, these words were genuinely spoken in the Palace this week as on 21/11/02 Sir Bobby Robson went to collect his knighthood.

Astle Headers Injury Verdict

The Jeff Astle, famous for his ability to score from headers, may have contributed to his eventual death by doing so. This story appears at BBC Warning over Astle's death

The inquest verdict on Jeff Astle's death could have serious consequences for the game, according to former Professional Footballers' Association vice-chairman Brendon Batson.

Coroner Andrew Haigh ruled that former West Brom striker Astle died from a degenerative brain disease caused by heading heavy leather footballs.

Astle collapsed and died in January aged 59, and his family have always maintained his death was caused by constantly heading a football.

Batson, now West Brom's chief executive, attended the inquest with Astle's family and said: "Now that we have the verdict it confirms their worst fears.

"There is a wide implication for football. There has been anecdotal evidence suggesting that players are having brain problems from being professional footballers.

"From the report they are suggesting that that might be trauma from heading the ball. So they could have a cause to the problems that Jeff suffered."

Astle's daughter Dawn said: "Since dad was diagnosed the family have believed that heading footballs caused his brain damage.

"We just wanted justice and for the truth to be known.

"At the end of the day the game he lived for has killed him. We always believed that playing soccer and heading the football day in and day out at West Brom had killed him.

"Our mum has lost her husband and we have lost a father, who will never know his grandchildren."

Astle hit 137 goals in 292 league appearances for West Brom and scored the extra-time winner in their 1968 FA Cup final win over Everton.

After retiring, he started a window cleaning business from his Derbyshire home.

Astle also enjoyed renewed fame in the 1990s with regular appearances on the Fantasy League television programme.

Pelé Informs

Pelé's campaign to promote impotence awareness, first spotted last year, seems to have been relaunced with adverts on television and in magazines.

Pelé is filmed saying, ' If you are experiencing erection problems, don't suffer in silence. Millions of men worldwide have asked for help - and got back their love lives and sence of well-being. Take the first step to a better love lfe today. I would.'

In the magazine version of the advert the quote is given next to a small photo of the man himself. The avdert concludes 'Better Love Life ~ Better you.'

There is a UK helpline number 0845 378 0144, and a website www.informED.org.uk . The advert is supported by Pfizer, and has logos from the Impotence Association and MHF - Men's Health Forum, also.
