History
Doesn't Repeat !
Back in
1972, Leeds United played away to Cardiff City in the 5th
round of the non-sponsored F.A. Cup and went on to win
it. This season Leeds were away to Cardiff City FA Cup
again - in the third round. Cardiff were in the old
Division Two first time round, and this time are a League
lower in the present Division Two.
For anyone who was holidaying on the Planer Zarg, Leeds
United went on to lose to Cardiff City, 2-1 . Indeed, I
was listening to Norman Hunter's comments on Radio Leeds
at the time. The game has subsequently become infamous
due to the actions of the Cardiff City fans, for which
the club may face a b*llocking.
The repeat
of the big tie for Cardiff City meant a couple of the old
Leeds team were asked their views.
Incidentally,
the last time Leeds United were knocked out of the FA Cup
in the third round, they won the Championship !!!
Hunter Warned Leeds !
Norman Hunter, gave spot on advice to the
Leeds team on the BBC site. See BBC SPORT FA CUP Hunter
warns Leeds,
which first appeared on 4 January 2002...
Hunter
warns Leeds
Norman Hunter's
tackling was feared by opponents Former Leeds United
and England star Norman Hunter has warned his former
club against complacency when they tackle Cardiff in
the FA Cup.
Leeds are riding
high in the Premiership and are only one step from
making the Uefa Cup quarter-finals.
But Hunter, an
uncompromising defender capped 28 times by England,
says that Sunday's trip to Ninian Park must not be
taken lightly by Leeds.
"There's no
such thing as an easy tie in the FA Cup," said
the 58-year-old.
"I can speak
from experience because I was in a team that went
down at Colchester.
"We were top
of the First Division, as it was then, we were
thinking we could just walk it and we got knocked out
3-2.
"There's
always shocks in the Cup and it's how you approach it
and who has the luck on the day.
"But if Leeds
play to their full potential and Cardiff do, then
Leeds will win - but the Cup doesn't always happen
that way."
Leeds sit atop the
Premiership after their 3-0 win over West Ham
midweek, chasing their first league title since the
1991/92 season.
Hunter believes
that the team's recent good run of form has been
helped by the return to action of Jonathan Woodgate
and Lee Bowyer, following their trial on grievous
bodily harm charges.
"I'm pleased
to say that since they've both come back, the team
has started to win," Hunter added.
"Since
Jonathan Woodgate has come back in defence they've
had three clean sheets and three wins.
"It's (the
trial and aftermath) been an ongoing event up here
and we're fed up with it.
"What we want
to do now is let these lads get on with what they're
good at, which is playing football."
Clarke Doesn't Warn Leeds
Meanwhile
on Leeds Official site, Allan Clarke was more hopeful about Leeds'
chances. See Leeds United Football Club - The
Official Website
LEEDS
legend Allan Clarke scored the only goal when United
beat Arsenal to win the FA Cup in 1972 and as David
O'Leary's side travel to Cardiff for their tricky
third round tie, Allan previews Sunday's game and
recalls how two Johnny Giles goals at Ninian Park the
same year helped Don Revie's boys to a 2-0 victory
over the Bluebirds on their way to Wembley.
Having disposed of
Bristol Rovers and Liverpool after a replay, when
Clarke scored both goals in a 2-0 victory at Elland
Road, United travelled down to the Welsh capital wary
of avoiding another cup upset like the famous
disaster at Colchester during the previous season.
But in front of
50,000 fans Leeds bossed the game as Giles came up
trumps. And it was the same three seasons later when
the two sides met in the third round, this time
United winning 4-1 at Elland Road, with 'Sniffer'
grabbing two of the Leeds goals.
So what do David
O'Leary's side face when they travel to the Welsh
capital this weekend?
Like Don Revie's
side of the 1970's, they offer the Bluebirds the
chance to chalk up a major cup upset as they arrive
at Ninian Park sitting proudly on top of the
Premiership.
But Allan Clarke
believes the current United side should have nothing
to fear.
Allan told www.leedsunited.co.uk: "I don't know what
Ninian Park is like today, but Leeds should win.
"Cardiff City
are only a small club whereas Leeds are one of the
biggest clubs in the world."
Recalling the day
Leeds were last in the Welsh capital he added:
"The day we played there in 1972 it was very wet
and the pitch was very boggy, but we will played some
magnificent football.
"Johnny Giles
got two goals, I made the second one for him, and no
disrespect to Cardiff, we absolutely hammered them.
It was like a practice match for us and the scoreline
flattered them.
"We went all
the way that year and it was a great honour to win
the centenary cup final and brilliant for our
fans."
As a great
goalscorer himself, Clarke is tipping the Robbie
Fowler, Mark Viduka partnership to fire Leeds to
glory on their trophy hunt this year.
"Fowler and
Viduka are doing very well at the moment and let's
hope they continue to do so," he continued.
"Leeds
supporters deserve some silverware this season and I
hope that the management and the players can
deliver."

Todd
Sacked !
Colin Todd
(Sunderland) has been sacked as manager of Derby County
after just 3 months. The club's last defeat to Aston
Villa on Saturday was Colin's 11th defeat in his 17 game
spell in charge. Derby County are now are one off bottom
in the Premiership, 3 points ahead of Leicester City, but
still in touch with the clubs immediately ahead of them.
Colin
originally joined the club in October 2000, as Jim
Smith's (Boston United) assistant, and became manager
whem Smith was sacked. Hence, Derby have sacked two Bob
70-71 stars this season ! Perhaps if they can take on Bruce
Rioch and sack
him the day relegation is confirmed they could complete a
unique treble !
