Royle back ?

According to 'The Non League Paper' 24 June 2001, No.66 Joe Royle is to sign a four month deal to act as Consultant for Conference side Chester City. The story made the front page of the paper - as did previous speculation that Harry Redknapp was being sought by Yeovil Town, so it may or may not be the case ...

My Mate Jim

I've been getting regular emails from Jim Craig (Celtic) recently. To start with I wasn't if it was the Jim Craig, but it is. It dates back to when Bobby Murdoch (See Obituary) sadly died. In order to access Celtic's site I had to register with it, which I duely did. Since then I've been getting regular Newsletter emails from Jim, which all begin, '...Dear Bob...'

Well, on going back to the site recently I see that Jim now has his own page in which there are video clips of him talking about his playing days at the club. They begin,' Hi Bob, I've been waiting for you, are you ready ? I'll just get settled...' Well, no they don't really. I've only seen the first one so far. The interviewer can't be heard in the background, which makes it a bit surreal at times, but otherwise it's worth the effort.

'Arry's Back

Harry Redknapp is back as the Director of Football for Portsmouth. The manager, Graham Rix is apparantly welcoming Harry with 'open arms'. I hardly like to point out to Graham the growing list of Directors of Football that replace the manager in the end - or that Harry was assistant to Billy Bonds (West Ham United) before he took over the role of manager at West Ham United ... The Official Portsmouth site rather insecurely enthuses that Portsmouth fans think it's a very good idea, honestly.

Portsmouth escaped relegation from Division One last season by just one point, finishing 20th.

Now that harry has confirmed his move to Portsmouth, Southampton - the other team involved with speculation for taking Harry on - are apprantly looking towards George Graham as a possible manager.

BBC SPORT SOUTHAMPTON Graham linked with Saints role

Shindler, Summerbee, Summerbee and Son.

Colin Shindler, author of 'Manchester United Ruined My Life' has written another Manchester City biased book, this time based on Mike Summerbee and family. Mike, whose father George was a professional footballer, is himself a footballing father of Nicky. Called, 'Fathers, Sons and Football', The book claims to reveal the two faces of football - the triumphs on the field and media hype versus the sackings, personal betrayals and fickle fans. I've not read it yet as it takes me around about 2 years to decent read books but it sits on the shelf, ready...

Mike, meanwhile was in the news recently giving backing to Kevin Keegan, City's new manager.

BBC SPORT MAN CITY Summerbee tips Keegan for glory reports:

Summerbee: Believes Keegan can turn things around

Former Manchester City star Mike Summerbee believes Kevin Keegan can bring the glory days back to Maine Road.

Keegan replaced Joe Royle in the Maine Road hot-seat at the end of last season after City were relegated back into Division One.

His first task will be to try to get City back into the promised land of Premiership football following relegation to Division One.

Summerbee said: "Joe Royle did a fantastic job but football is ever changing and sometimes things don't work out how you would expect them to.

"It is sad because Joe is a very, very nice man. Now Kevin is in charge - an ex-England man just in case anyone needs reminding.

"His name and reputation will attract not only players but also corporate and commercial business to the club.

"When you add to the fact that we are not long off moving to a new stadium, then the future does look very bright."

Keegan is known to have a habit of heading for the exit door when the going gets tough.

But Summerbee is adamant that Keegan will see his contract out at Maine Road.

"I know Kevin very well and I think you have seen the last of him walking out on clubs," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"He knows what he wants and what he is doing and I think he and Manchester City have linked up at just the right time."

Venables for Greece ?

A further piece of speculation from earlier this month was, as ever, centered around the very media friendly Terry Venables (QPR). After England's victory there, it seems Terry was approached about taking over the role as the national football team coach. The approach was confimed as being true, but it seems that former commitments are likely to get in the way of happening. See BBC SPORT WORLD CUP 2002 Greece play down Venables link

Operation Clough

Nottingham Police have apparantly named their anti-theft campaign Operation Brian Clough (Derby County manager). I would expand on this but I only about it because Football 365 reported Radio Five reported it ! See Football365.com - Brian Clough

Postscript: This isn't the official name, according tothe Nottingham Police Website, it's called Operation Bumble Bee !

Don't Getti Bonetti !

According to Football365.com Aston Villa had lined up Peter Bonetti (Chelsea) as the club's new goalkeeping coach - without the knowledge of their current number 1, David James. James favours present coach, Paul Barron. There was talk of Barron going to Middlesbrough, however, and Doug Ellis had approached Bonetti, the Under 21 goalkeeping coach, whilst they were in Greece prior to the recent England match.

Bring Back Frank !

Football365.com reports that Frank Lampard senior is the fans choice as West HamUnited's new manager. Certainly he would be a consistant choice for the club, who tend to be loyal to former players. Frank does not seem to have ruled himself out of this speculation and West Ham have been pretty unlucky in their attempts to get a replacement. One radio journalist speculated that the best available person for the job and currently available would be ... Harry Redknapp!

Harry meanwhile continues to be closely linked with Southampton.

Postscript (20/06/01)- well in the end Glen Roeder got the West Ham manager's job and the fans were most dischuffed. See WHU Fans Say NO To Roeder - West Ham Online

Sp ! - Write Out 'Geoff' x 500 By Next Lesson

Imagine my surprise ! Listening to the Sterophonics' new album, 'Just Enough Education to Perform' I heard Geoff Hurst's name pop up ! Track six of the current Top Ten album, 'Nice to be One' has the line, 'The famous turf that made Geoff Hurst'. Don't ask me the meaning of the lyric, but here it is in its full glory (from the Stereophonic's Official Site at Lyrics):

You asked me so where have you been
Let me think now let me see
I stood once where Hitlers feet
had stood when he made his speech
In Nuremburg in thirty eight
When he tried to build the perfect race
He said black man ain't gonna run
Alongside our perfect sons

There was Dallas too, the library
The place they ended Kennedy
We stood where Oswald took his shot
In my opinion there's a bigger plot
Costners back and to the left
The picket fence the better bet
Paris came and summer went
The tunnel's now a flower bed

The famous turf that made
Jeff Hurst
The vodka stops to quench my thirst
The Golden Gate stroke Alcatraz
And the fat man failed to get us passes
Jimmys corner in Raging Bull
De Niros jokes and bottled pills
Elvis tales from Mr Woodward
Any Richard Burton if you could

Tourists stare at tourist stops
One more picture one more God
Another top up for a change
It makes you think, it makes you sane
Talking more about yourself
There's a mirror too, have a check
Cheques are always passing through
Some depart but a lot come too

Restaurant talk or pick your teeth
You bite your tongue or chew your meat
Sleep or drink or drink to sleep
And one more week and we will meet
We'll talk of what we haven't done
Since we departed back a month
We argue why we have to shout
All in all it's nice to be out.

You'll notice that Geoff is written as 'Jeff' - but I do not believe I'm in any position to criticise anyone's spelling (this site comes to you dangerously free of any spellcheck...).

This is the second lyric to appear on the site following 'Denis Law and Ali McGraw' by the Men They Couldn't Hang'.
