October 2000

Don Rogers (Swindon Town) Yet again 'The Non League Paper' was the Sunday reading of choice and once again it did not disappoint. This week, the 23 October 2000, No. 31 edition included this news item on the return of Don Rogers to management of Pewsley Vale. The team are currently bottom of the Screwfix Western League Division One (see Screwfix Direct Western League) and recently lost 11-0 ... at home !

Here's the article in full ...

THE MOUSTACHE is still there - the flowing locks are a little shorter and tinged with grey but the enthusiasm that carried Don Rogers to fame after scoring twice for Swindon in their League Cup victory over Arsenal in 1969 still shines brightly.

Rogers, as predicted in last week's NLP has become manager at struggling Screwfix Western League Division one club Pewsey Vale, and faces the difficult task of lifting a team rooted to the bottom of the division with just one point from nine games - including the recent I I -0 home defeat at the hands of Exmouth which saw the resignation of the previous management team.

Rogers, 54, who still lives and runs his sports business in Swindon, will need all the experience gained in a long playing career and local Non-League management with Swindon Supermarine, Hungerford Town and Lamboume Sports of the Hellenic League to resurrect the Wiltshire club.

Joining Swindor. Town as a 15-year-old, Rogers became a local hero playing in more than 400 games for the Robins before moving to Crystal Palace. He stayed in London to join Queens Park Rangers under Dave Sexton and was a member of the team who were runners up to Liverpool in the old First Division in the 1975n6 season, before retiring from the professional game the following year.

Rogers said he had accepted Pewsey's offer because. "It's a place I have had a lot of dealings with over the last 20 years, I know the place and the people well and the chairman's keen for the club to progress, that will do well for me."

Rogers will have John Fisher as his assistant along with Mark Spackman, he said: "There will be four of us running the club, John and I were together at Supermarine and Mark has been with me for seven years. I would also like Steve Wooden to stay on, he's local lad who has worked hard.

"People are so keen at this level, if you get a bunch of people who are really keen to do well for the club and Pewsey seems to have them, then we should be able to take the club forward."

John Brownlie
(Hibernian) At the end of September, Arbroath signed up John as their manager. The site offer the following the following career breakdown post-Hibbs...

After leaving Hibs in 1978 John moved to the English first Division, joining Newcastle Utd and, in 1982, Middlesborough. He joined English Second Division side Hartlepool two years later, retiring as a player in 1986.  1987 saw John embarking on his managerial/coaching career, taking over at Cowdenbeath. During his time there he gained them promotion to the First Division for the first time in 30 years.

In 1990 he moved to Clyde as full time assistant to Alex Smith, where he was responsible for setting up the youth coaching programme as well as coaching the first team which, in 1994, won promotion to Division 1. In 1996 John returned to Division 2 as manager of East Stirling, where he again set up a youth coaching programme. His efforts in that field attracted the attention of Raith Rovers, at that time in the Premier League, who took him to Stark's Park the following year to set up and run its youth programme on a full time basis. A Boardroom takeover in 1999 saw the entire coaching staff at Stark's Park replaced.

One of the main reasons John had links with Arbroarh is that his son, Paul and joined them following his transfer from Raith Rovers, where they had previously been at the same club. Arbroath are now (14 Oct 2000) 5th placed in the 10 club Scottish Second Division, and last season they finished 4th in the League. Paul's been added to the Sons and Daughter's Page.

Graham Turner (Chester City) Thanks yet again to 'The Non-League Paper' for this information.

Graham Turner Hereford United manager

Graham Turner - Mr Hereford United

Graham Turner, who began his career at Wrexham in 1965, was mid way through a 200+ game spell at Chester City in the 1970-71 - before moving on to Shrewsbury Town, where he played nearly 350 League games. Now he is Chairman, Director of Football, manager and major shareholder of another Welsh - English side, Hereford United. Graham was manager of the club when they lost League status in 1997, but has stayed on to turn the club's fortunes around. Presently the side are riding high at fourth in the Nationwide Conference League, and are no longer in iminent danger of collapse. See Hereford United Unofficial Supporters Site which is providing the picture above, and Graham Turner on the official site.

Ronnie Boyce (West Ham United)

In spite of the Rothmans Football Yearbook (1999-00, 2000-01) listing Ronnie as their Chief Scout for the last two seasons, I see from the Spurs official site that he has been their Chief Scout since 1998 ! Does he hold both posts ?
