November 2001

Thanks to the everyone who has written in this month.

Tony Bowden has sent me an update of the whereabouts of Crystal Palace players. Tony writes:

It was great seeing the old stars. Last season v Fulham Palace had a reunion of players who helped them up to the first division 68-69 another season I remember well I can't believe it was that long ago,. A number of players who played in season 70-71 were present , David Payne organised it. Colin Taylor, Roger Hoy, Cliff Jackson , Bobby Woodruff and Manager Bert Head now in his 80s were also present,

John Jackson (Crystal Palace) a wonderful keeper is still involved in football with Brighton's youth team,

Captain,
John Sewell (Crystal Palace) lives in America is an antiques dealer,

John Loughlan (Crystal Palace) is a postman in Leicester,

John McCormick (Crystal Palace) a rugged centre half owns an hotel near Glasgow,

Phil Hoadley (Crystal Palace) is youth development officer at Norwich,

Hope this is a help to you.

It is, Tony, thanks very much for all the information you sent.

David Hay (Celtic) Mentioning Tony Taylor above, reminds me that this site has never reported that David Hay is Head Coach at Livingston. It took a holiday in Edinburg to find out. Livingston are presently riding high in third place in the Premier Division and looking good to go all the way !

Stuart Pearson (Hull City squad) I see from reports on the BBC website that he's working for Man Utd own satelitte channel.

Tony Draper-Smith wrote to say

Terry
Alcock (Blackpool) is now running Birley Arms pub/rest in Warton nr Blackpool

Barry Siddall (ex Blackpool goalie) is now living in Kirkham and works localy as a postman

Thanks Tony

The Sheffield Wednesday Official website has written profiles of their incoming manager and his assistant on the day that they have been appointed. I've included them here as a useful up-to-date career details on two of Bob's 70-71 favourites.

Terry Yorath (Leeds United squad) (From Sheffield Wednesday Football Club - profiles)

Terry Yorath was born in Cardiff 51 years ago and made his name as a player through ten years as part of an awesome Leeds United side which captured trophies both at home and in Europe. His leadership qualities made him a natural candidate to skipper the side on many occasions, an achievement he mirrored with Wales at international level (42 of his 59 full caps came whilst wearing the armband, a Welsh record). (I didn't know that ! - Bob)

Leaving Elland Road in 1976, he contributed more sterling service at in the top flight with Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur, before crossing the Atlantic in 1981 to turn out for Vancouver Whitecaps.

At the veteran stage of his career, Yorath ascended to a player/coach role at Bradford City and later became player/manager of Swansea City, whom he subsequently led to promotion.

He then returned to Valley Parade for a three-year stint as manager before enjoying a highly productive five-year tenure in charge of the Welsh national side. Under Yorath's stewardship, Wales recorded impressive victories over Germany, Italy and Brazil, and came within one game of becoming the only home nation to qualify for the 1994 World Cup Finals

His international pedigree was further enhanced between 1995 and 1997 when, as boss of the Lebanon national team, he helped them rise some 60 places in the FIFA World Rankings table.

Since returning to these shores four years ago, Terry hasd relished coaching roles at Huddersfield Town and Bradford City (again) before joining the Owls, initially as First Team Coach, before the start of the 2000/01 campaign.

Willie Donachie (Manchester City squad) (from Sheffield Wednesday Football Club - profiles)

As a player, Willie Donachie was best known as a forceful and long-serving left back with Manchester City (he clocked up well over 400 games for the Maine Road outfit, appearing in two League Cup Finals) and Scotland - gaining 35 caps and competing in the 1978 World Cup Finals.

After leaving Manchester for a period playing in the USA with Portland Timbers, he also had spells at Norwich City, Burnley and Oldham Athletic before moving into the coaching side of the game whilst at Boundary Park

The Glaswegian proved to be an invaluable right-hand man to Joe Royle as the Latics roared back into the limelight during the late 1980s and early 1990s, before following Royle to Everton - where he helped guide the Toffees into Europe thanks to a 1-0 victory over
Manchester United in the 1995 FA Cup Final.

Now 49, he has worked in Sheffield before as First Team Coach to Nigel Spackman at Bramall Lane in the 1997/98 season, as the Blades reached the FA Cup Semi Finals and were defeated in the Play-Offs. Nine months later, Donachie then linked up with Joe Royle once more, this time at his old club Manchester City as the pair masterminded the club's surge from the Second Division to the Premiership in successive seasons.

Andy Button tells me that he's

Just discovered your brilliant site, brought back memories of honest footballers playing real football. Thought you might like to know that :

Thanks Andy, and thanks for the comments about the site.
