Cup-holders go out at first hurdle . .. Jimmy Adamson
resigns at Burnley .. . the 'kissing and cuddling'
scandal... Bowles transfer-listed again... Newcastle and
Manchester City for League Cup final.
1 Oleg Blochin of Russia is the European 'Footballer of
the Year'. Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Vogts, and Maier are
placed in the first five ... Colin Todd is ninth.
2 Alien Brown is appointed manager of Southport, who are
at the bottom of the fourth division.
3 Both last year's finalists, West Ham and Fulham, are
beaten in the third round of the FA Cup - the first time
this has happened for 43 years... Tooting draw 2-2 at
Swindon having been 2-0 down until the last six minutes
.. . Manchester United beat Oxford with the help of two
penalties scored by Gerry Daly - Oxford were leading 1-0
at half-time.
6 Tooting beat Swindon 2-1 and progress into Round 4. An
early Tooting goal in this FA Cup replay is cancelled out
by an own goal headed 'home' by defender Bobby Green, but
five minutes from time, Alan Ives, a 27-years-old sales
rep. gets the winner... Jimmy Adamson leaves Burnley
after 29 years' association with the club. Following last
Saturday's Cup defeat at Blackpool it was reported that
there were scuffles in the dressing room between players
and staff. Adamson was locked out and now he has decided
to resign.
7 Peterborough beat Nottingham Forest in a Cup replay and
will meet Manchester United in the next round ... Stan
Bowles misses a penalty for QPR at Newcastle, and Tommy
Craig scores one, so Newcastle go through to the next
round ... Don Revie asks 28 players to keep themselves
free for England's international programme at the end of
May and early June ... Joe Brown, Jimmy Adamson's former
assistant at Burnley, takes over the managerial job at
the club.
8 Roy Greenwood of Hull signs for Sunderland for
£120,000.
10 Bobby Charlton makes another 'comeback' - he is to
play a few matches for Irish dub Waterfbrd ... Manchester
United are bach on top of Division One after their 2-1
victory over QPR ... Alan Gowling scores his third
hat-trick of the season in Newcastle's 5-0 defeat of
Everton ... Portsmouth gain their first home win of the
season by beating Carlisle 1-0 ... Not a single player is
sent off in the League.
11 In a Sunday People exclusive, Alan Ball attacks Don
Revie's training methods and says that yes-men are
selected for England instead of players of ability and
imagination. 'Some of the players picked are donkeys.
Give them a lump of sugar and they run all day and play
bingo all night.'
12 Don Revie answers Ball: 'I am disappointed to hear a
player for whom I have a great deal of admiration
criticizing his fellow professionals. Alan Ball should
concentrate on helping Arsenal. I often wish certain
players would slop talking about how good they are and
what they are going to do in a match . .. and actually
get out on the pitch and do it'... Eddie Kelly is put on
the transfer list at Arsenal ... Scunthorpe manager Dicky
Rooks is sacked ... The Rodney Marsh saga is over - he
signs for Tampa Bay Rowdies of Florida. In future the
ex-Manchester City forward will spend six months in the
USA and six in Britain, where he'll be available to play
for non-League clubs.
13 Six players refuse to turn out for Ramsgate in a Kent
Cup tie as a demonstration of solidarity with sacked
manager, Alf Benttey... The FA are considering a £2
million deal for the 190 acre Ambassador College in
Hertfordshire. They would convert the college into a
National Football Training Centre . . . The FA's Match
and Ground Committee are recommending to the executive
that 'kissing and cuddling and making gestures to the
crowd when a goal is scored should be stopped and that
players who continue to act this way should be charged
with bringing the game into disrepute.' Committee member
Dan Tana explains: 'We feel the biggest problem is the
players running behind the goal and throwing their fists
into the air after scoring This could incite trouble
among the fans'. .. Hickton scores the only goal of the
match at Middlesbrough where Manchester City are beaten
in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final...
14 In the European Championship draw Wales are drawn
against highly-rated Yugoslavia. England U-23 will face
Hungary, Liverpool play Dynamo Dresden - a repeat of
their 1973 meeting, and West Ham are drawn against Den
Haag, a middle of-the-table Dutch team.
15 Peterborough spend £25,000 on buying Ernie Moss of
Chesterfield - a record for the club .. . Ron Ashman is
back as manager of Scunthorpe .. . Dennis Tueart of
Manchester City is suspended for two matches following
his FA Cup 'punch-up' with Hartlepool player, George
Potter.
17 Willie Bell, the Birmingham manager, withdraws skipper
Kenny Bums at half-time against QPR. Bums was booked
earlier, and then was involved in an off-the-ball
incident with Hollins. Bell says: '1 cannot tolerate that
sort of thing. I want my men to play the game as it
should be played'.
19 Stan Bowles is on the transfer list at QPR at his own
request. His wife and children have moved back to
Manchester and the player wishes to join them. This is
the third time that Bowles has been on the list
21 There will be an all-Northern League Cup Final at
Wembley. Newcastle beat Tottenham 3-1 with the help of
hotly disputed early goal by Alan Cowling and further
scores by Keeley and Nulty. Manchester City easily
dispose of Middlesbrough's challenge with a 4-0 win at
Maine Road ... Sir Alf Ramsey joins Birmingham City as a
club director. He will advise the Board, but will have no
executive function - Willie Bell continues to have full
control of all the playing affairs of the club... Ken
Furphy the ex-Sheffield United manager is appointed coach
to New York Cosmos, the club in the USA for which Pele
plays.
24 Third Division Crystal Palace defeat First Division
Leeds 1-0 at Leeds thus creating the sensation of Round
4. David Swindlehurst scores in the firsl half.
Non-Leaguers Tooting lose al Bradford.
25 There are bitter complaints from Tooting concerning
the behaviour of Bradford -the club and its alleged
supporters - yesterday, li is claimed that hidden
microphones were put in one side of the ground to
increase the volume of vocal support for the home team.
After the match the Bradford hooligans attacked the
Tooting fans with bricks and stones causing several
injuries.
26 Kettering are the first English club 10 carry
advertising on their jerseys during a match. Manager
Derek Dougan has arranged a contract with a local tyre
company. Football League Secretary AJan Hardaker does not
approve of this development. He says: 'Those who go to
soccer want to see a game of football, not to be reminded
every time they look at a player that (hey must go home
and tell the wife to change her soap powder.'
28 Charlton win 3-0 at Portsmouth in an FA Cup replay and
reach the Fifth Round for the first time in 14 years...
Ladbrokes are said to be prepared to sponsor the Home
International Championship for three years... FIFA will
organize a World Cup for Under-20-year-old players in
Tunisia in 1977, and thereafter every two years.
29 lan St John, the Portsmouth manager, makes a verbal
attack on his players following the defeat by Charlton:
'We had over 30,000 people at the ground - the best
attendance for years. But my players must have thought
that the game would be on the following day. Even my
youth team would have beaten us today'... Hereford
announce an early kick-off v Crystal Palace to
accommodate television transmission . .. But the Football
League intervene to prevent the game from being
televised, because the BBC and the Football League have
an agreement not to publicise in advance the venue of a
televised match. . . Mike Pejic of Stoke and Willie
Donachie of Manchester City are sent off in an eventful
Cup tie at Stoke. Jimmy Greenhoff's late goal puts Stoke
into Round 5 ... Colin Viljoen is out of football for the
rest of the season with an Achilles tendon injury.
30 George Best is no longer wanted by Cork Celtic. He has
played three limes for the Irish club, and although be
has drawn the crowds his football has lacked enthusiasm.
